CrazyDaizy
Hia Folks Every morning we have to clean out the Nest inside the Eglu and put fresh straw in it. After all, it's got to be better for the chooks to lay an egg in fresh clean straw than sitting in a load of poop. How on earth can we avoid them pooping into the nest in the night? I really wish they wouldnt do it.
Patricia W
Put a football or a flower pot ( upside down) in there. They'll get the idea. I have to say, I'm soft and let them! Tricia
Laura & CTB
yeah I started by putting a flower pot in there too but I felt really mean when I saw one of the girls trying to sleep on top of the pot - I caved in too! Now I just change the straw each day.
CrazyDaizy
Thanx folks So a large plant pot.... then move it during the day so they can lay in a nice clean nest. Maybe I need to build some kind of "perch" for them above the slats? We have the plastic slats so how would we build a perch.
Ain't Nobody Here
I'd try a football (they can sit - and poo - on top of a flowerpot ). You won't need to build a perch, the roosting bars are designed for them to perch on

Ain't Nobody Here
An eglu-cam would be essential .
coco
Mine poop in the nest box and lay next to it. They have dragged the straw out of the nest box and put it where they want it. I just let them get on with it now.
kerryegg
One of mine is usually in the nest box but moves out if I touch her gently wnen I shut them up for the night and obviously doesn't return except to lay.I use shredded paper but it was a pain getting eggs with poo on. Sounds like a good idea.... maybe when we close the Eglu at night (and we always check they are all in there by torchlight) we should budge them off the nest?? Might give that a go. I suggested the football idea to my hubby and he took pity, and said "you cant do that to them" Besides, they might poop on that too! chickencam
We use woodshavings in the nest boxes in both the Eglu and our home made wooden house and they do get slept in quite often. The shavings cover the poo quite well and we just accept that one of the first jobs of the day is to clean out the boxes. We tried loads of different perching options in the new house and there is usually one of them that takes up residence in the nest boxes. jackieb
We had this problem so tried the flower pot in the nest box trick, only to find Daisy asleep on the top of the flower pot, so we went to plan B which is to lay newspaper in the nest box at night and lift it out first thing in the morning, this leaves the nest box clean for them to lay in during the day. The only time this has been a problem is when Lily occasionally decides to lay before I get down to let them out.

What a good idea, one of my bantams doesn't sleep in the nestbox, she perches on the dividing wall , not so bad if she perches facing the nestbox but she faces the roosting bars....and how much poo can one little bantam do at night Sha x
