Sour crop and soft egg..

Recommended Posts

Flo, our 6 month old GNRGNR seems to have a large crop lately. She seems OK, and I assumed that she ate a lot during the day and in the morning it wasn't that bad. Also, have been up close and personal and she doesn't smell or anything.

Today coming back from work she didn't seem to be herself, and her back end seems to be throbbing, as if she was about to lay another egg. She laid an egg this morning.

She passed some liquid from her vent tonight, and when I was watching her, something like a soft egg shell came out of her vent, which before I could retrieve it, my other GNR ate it.

I assume I will have a soft egg tomorrow, which always takes her a day to get over - can I give her anything to make her feel better.

Other people on this forum say about giving Bokashi Bran - where do I get this from, and how often can I give it. Will this make our girl a bit pf a boost?

Am worried - seem to have problems at both ends

A large crop in itself isn't a bad thing. It's if it's squishy and watery it might be sour crop (my Milly has that just now :( ) or if it's not emptying overnight it might be an impacted crop. Check it in the morning to see if it's still large.

Milly had lots (and lots) of liquid pouring from her mouth when I gently tipped her forward :( . Try that with Flo if you suspect sour crop (but you have to be careful they don't choke & drown :anxious: ).

Softies certainly make them unwell but once they've passed it they should be fine. Bokashi doesn't really help with softies, more with digestion but it's good for them in any case. You can feed it daily in any amounts you wish! I get mine from Ebay but Wiggly Wigglers sell it too.

You may want to give them limestone flour for the softies. Cod liver oil helps with the calcium absorption and helps the flour stick to the pellets or corn.
