We can go to Old Basing along the nice little river, see King John's castle near Greywell, watch the Chinooks at Long Sutton (nice layby with views over the base ). We could even pop them on a barge up the Basingstoke Canal, and if that won't wear them out, nip down to Boscombe or New Milton or something like that. Or Winchester. They sell Montgomery Cheddar which is the most delicious old-fashioned cheddar you can buy - we ALWAYS stop and buy a sliver for my Mum. Lovely flower shop too - Marley flowers. Film location for period dramas such as Cranford, Pride and Prejudice and a couple of the Harry Potter films. The Abbey has lovely grounds to walk in and it is fairly accessible. There is also the Fox Talbot Museum - about the guy who invented negative/positive process in photography. Some nice tea shops, etc in the village which is very quaint. There is also Bowood House and gardens, also near Chippenham. 18th century house, grounds by Capability Brown. Mother will have been to every stately home, but I'll check because we only need to avoid ones with special memories. Fox Talbot is out, my Father was a very keen amateur photographer. Its got tea rooms, weird shops, and the Abbey ruins are at the bottom of the high street. M Well, we did exactly that, we stayed near Burley! Had a wonderful 3 days in the New Forest, it was the perfect place to take Mother. Thank you to everyone for great suggestions. I've listed the other places for future outings, and this topic really helped my planning of this one.
