Sorry, Jars Again!

Recommended Posts

Please can I ask some silly jar questions?

If you re-use jars do you use the original lids?

Do you need to do something to 'seal' jars once filled? (so the lids dont press in or something???)

How do you clean the jars before re-use? do they need to be sterilised?

I have some big jars that I want to pickle eggs and beetroot in (not together obviously  ) my lovely big brother has been saving me giant jars :D

Hi,

Yes,I reuse the lids. Most are plastic covered on the inside,so pretty safe.

If you jar up something hot,it makes a good seal, with the 'popper' top going down,as with the ones in the supermarket.

You need to fill them when both they are hot,& the jam you have made is hot too, then put the lid on as tight as you can (you may need to hold the full jar in a teatowel as they get very hot) to get a good seal.

To clean them I give them a rinse then run them through the dishwasher, then store them until needed.

Then just before I need them I dishwasher them again on my intensive cycle to sterilize them & to heat them up,ready to be filled :D

You can also sterilize them by washing them by hand, rinsing the suds off & putting them in a warm oven, but a run through the dishwasher works for me :D

I also dishwash mine but when I want to use them I sterilize them in the microwave - just half fill them with water and run for about 3 mins.

I use the same lids and sit here in the evening listening to them "popping"!
