Plum
That's really classy accommodation Good to see they appreciate the perch
fujcube
I've taken the perch out. They don't use it and it just gets in the way. They can perch on the front of their bed area if they want to. Will put it back in, only if they ask nicely though!!! Regards

chickenNutter
Gosh fujcube! Are you very rich? My set up looks like the Beverly Hillbillies by comparison.
fujcube
Maybe Oreo is really a Silkie with a few mutant genes No, I'm not rich All my huts were made from offcuts from work. Hopefully, if all goes to plan, I'll be making a lot more next year and selling them on, although I will be buying the wood in for them. Then I'll be rich Regards

fujcube
Thanks to everyone for their kind comments. Now that my girls are settled in their new surroundings, the focus is now on egg production!! There is some rather stiff local competition when it comes to free range eggs. Hopefully, Megg will give us the edge when she starts laying beautiful sky blue eggs. As my girls are yet to start laying, I would like to give them the best possible start and am looking for all your advice on feed, secret ingredients etc etc etc. How it is at the moment: None of my girls are interested in the food supplied by the Wernlas guys. I think they are Growers Pellets. I bought a bag of mixed grains, they are not that interested in that either. They seem to be happy enough eating the grass and whatever bugs happen to be available. They have never touched the grit that we put out, although our friend with X-Bats suggested that it may be a little on the large side. This was provided by the Wernals guys too. fujcube
Hi all, Went to check our girls tonight before putting them to bed for the night and guess what?? The best Christmas present ever! Just when I'd given up hope until the spring. We also had a visit from the S.P.C.A last week!!! Someone!! had made a complaint about our chickens and the fact that Oreo, our Lionhead Rabbit, had a bigger hut than our 4 chickens!! S.P.C.A couldn't believe it when they did their inspection and neither could I. What a complete waste of everyone's time. Just a shame that they are not allowed to name names!!! fujcube
Thanks for your kind comments. That was the point I was trying to put across to the S.P.C.A Our chooks were well researched before and after buying them. Everyone who stops at our garden comments on how nice it is to see them having the run of the garden and what beautiful condition they are in. We also took the time to print off facts sheets which are displayed on the roof of the Rabbit hutch. Each sheet has a photo, their name, breed and breed history. We also ask people not to feed our chooks and rabbit as they would probably end up munching on crisps, gum and chocolate!!!! However, we do encourage people to come into the garden for a better look at our animals and if they have children, we give them a small handful of corn to throw on the lawn. To think that someone I have probably had a polite discussion with, has had the nerve to report us to the S.P.C.A behind our backs. If they were so concerned as to the welfare of my animals, they should have armed themselves with the facts first, before making unfounded allegations against us. I'll be expecting another visit from the S.P.C.A and maybe the local authority, in the spring, when we get our next batch of chooks and call ducks.
