Giving a Chicken Talk to Pre-School Children

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I have been asked if I would consider talking to the pre-school children at my Son's nursery.

Has anyone given a talk to this agegroup and what suggestions can you give me as to what I should talk cover?

I will likely take my Silver Sussex Streamer, Vimto with me as she's very good looking (not that my other 6 aren't but her colours are striking) and she's probably the tamest. It's only for 20 mins max and it's 2 mins from my house so shouldn't stress her out too much. And I've got my bouncing eggs at the ready!

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

My God Daughter is 2 and loves looking in the nest box for eggs, so I think Lewis' idea is a good one :D She also likes stroking my tamest girls, but several toddlers will probably freak your girls out

Colouring as suggested by Cathy is also good.

Do you have different coloured eggs, as this always fascinates my God Daughter, she thinks that Blue Eggs are magic

Let us know how you get on :D

Keep it simple.

As well as showing them the eggs and telling them where they come from - ie they don't all come from the shop! - Let them handle the eggs, most children will be careful and if they do break it doesn't matter, so long as you are giving your talk somewhere that can be cleaned up.

You could have photos of where your chickens live, sleep, lay, eat drink and a sample of their food and and ask the children 'where do they live?' and 'what did they have for breakfast today?' They can compare themselves to the chicken - would they like to sleep on roosting bars?

Maybe you could finish off with an egg hunt?

I know rules and regs would prohibit this, but wouldn't it have been interesting to carry out a comparison.

  1. Set up camcorder recording whole room.
  2. Let chickens loose.
  3. Grab handful of corn and throw into centre of room.
  4. Observe mayhem.
  5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 substituting sweets for corn and children for chickens.
  6. Comment on parallels.....

Different coloured eggs are a must, a double as well if you’ve got one,

I put some on display at both of the 2 displays I’ve done this autumn the kids were fascinated by them especially the double I cracked open at the Sandwell show
