I am considering using tree bits to decorate/entertain/elevate my chooks in their run. It occured to me they may harbour redmite and the like. Is this a legitimate worry?

I always use tree branches and have never had any problems myself.

I dust mine with stalosan when they get poo on them.

I'd never considered it - I suppose if you got a bad redmite infestation then the branches could get infested, but I've got a big limb off a silver birch tree in mine and it's been fine. Unless you have had redmite, I wouldn't worry.

My run's full of branches . (I do the same as Plum .)

They should be fine, we have some bamboo canes (they're bantams) and branches going across the run.

If they're in the sun all day the mites wouldn't like it and so wouldn't stay there ... hopefully.

I had a red mite problem in my Eglu and WIR run a couple of months back, I have branches in the run and just stripped off any loose bark - no red mites under there but it was worth doing just to be safe
