cluckingmad
She's doing great Been acheeky little madam and pinching food off plates, sticking her head in a glass of red wine last night (apparently rather enjoyed it... this will not be encouraged!!!) and even took on one of the cats who she deemed to have been looking a\t her in a funny way Poor Oscar, he just looked up to see her starting at him, then she pecked him on the nose! We tried her in the larger cat carrier last night thinking it'd be better for her as she can move around more, but she got so distressed that we put her back in the little one and placed it back on the coffee table where she can se eus and she settled down immediately - poor mite, must be lonely
Chicken Shirl
Oh bless her. They say red wine is good for them! Just wanted yu to know she is being thought of, and you of course. Glad to know she is on the mend.
LJ's Chooks
Oh fabulous... red wine is good for them..... err does that mean i have to learn to share????? I'm glad she's doing ok. If you are going to use a poultry saddle, watch out for lice/mites, try and giveher a dust with powder before you put it on... i know there arent feathers under it, but you dont want to add to her challenges. they are notorious breading grounds for the little blighters, so make sure she's clear and stays clear. Glad you decided to put her back on the coffee table.... how's she going to get at the biscuits and cake if you put her in a bigger basket!! keep up the had work, you must be so relieved to see her making progress. Chook n Boo Mum
I'm so glad things are going well...... I must admit to a snort of amusement at the vision of the mog, minding his own business having been stared out by a chook who obviously feels he's lower in the pecking order & should be told so forthwith !!! They have ways of letting us know exactly what is acceptable in their mind and what isn't don' they Sha x
sandyhas3chucks
Don't try the red wine another posting here or somewhere else said the shock can kill them outright! I thought the separation thing was simply in a separate cage/ crate/ run, to put her in darkness seems somewhat cruel? Hopefully the "experienced " in these matters will come and put us straight
cluckingmad
To be honest, I'm not sure either Don't want to be unkind to Pepper, but at the same time would really rather she stopped hanging onto outher peoples combs ! Hopefully the saddles will arrive tomorrow so my little girl can model hers for the forum Bit cautious about dusting her tbh, the tissue is drying up and scabbing over nicely and not sure that the powder won't irritate the wound? She's very recently been dusted for lice/mites as have all her friends so probably don't need to worry toooo much, will wash her sddle regularly for her anyway so will keep checking her over and make sure shes in good nick Thank you all for your kind words over the last week, don't know how I'd have managed without you! sandyhas3chucks
just been looking at other posts, no one I 've read mentions kepingin the dark, just confined and not with the others.
Jools
I've never had to resort to that either but I can sort of see the sense in it, in that being in the dark does calm them and they go to sleep BUT they need light to be awake enough to eat and drink so I'm really not sure it's a good idea. Daphne
I've been following this and its so lovely to hear that things are turning out so well. Poor Nutmeg looked so awful in the first photos, and its very encouraging to see that this sort of wound can heal, I've found your story quite inspiring. Re the saddles - I wouldn't dust with anything because unless her wound has scabbed over you might irritate it. Anyway, when you check on the healing progress you can check for lice/mites at the same time. Our girls were wearing saddles all summer with no nasties because we treated them at the start, like you have already, and Nutty, hopefully, won't have hers on for so long! The other thing I'd say (bit obviously!) is just make sure the saddle isn't rubbing her injury (not sure what material you've gone for). cluckingmad
Her Ladyship is now sporting a very snazzy little saddle She was really good having it put on, has taken to it immediately and has been out with the others all day (supervised of course)... vets thrilled with her recovery, has given her the go ahead to go back into the WIR with the other babies as of saturday, once she finishes her antibiotics :D:D

cluckingmad
Oh I'm so proud of my little hen!! After free ranging with the others yesterday, I noticed that she was a tad mucky, with soil and all sorts stuck to her feathers as a result of the wound gel she's had to have put on. So, tonight was Bath Time. She was an absolute angel, OH had to gently hold her wings up while I gave her a bit of a wash - its amazing how much filth you can get off a chook purely with warm water, a teensy bit of Dove sensitive soap and an old toothbrush Also gave us a chace to see how the wound is healing, most of the original bloodied mess has is now dried and new skin is growing from the outer edges. She's been preening ALOT this evening so we think it must be itchy for her, but no pecking or anthing like that. Bit concerned that she's now really trying to use her preen gland (which was practically taken off in the attack), but she's not done any damage to it this evening (despite worried mum here gently trying to disuade her from going near it... totally ignored as usual ) so probably s houldn't be too concerned Now the wound has healed over the we together with the vet think its time to let her go back with the others if she wants to.. suspect I'll be bathing a grubby little girl for a few weeks yet tho'

Chicken Shirl
That's wonderful news. I think if the wound was sore she wouldn't be trying to use her preen gland. We do worry so. Don't we? Take care all of you. Shirley.x

spratly0
Wow what good news, well done she looks great. A very similar thing happened to my Mae last november, my vet stitched her back and though the wound has healed the feathers have not come back yet as either the others or Mae herself pecks them out before they fully form. Mae has the same jacket, but the feathers did not seem to grow under it and when it got grubby i washed it and it shrunk I dont know if its the stitching of her back but in all other respects she is her old self. Hens do seem to be resilient little things always full of surprises. Good luck Nutty!
cluckingmad
And shes back with the others We weren't goign to be in saturday till sunday so we left Lilly in the carrier with Nutmeg and everything was fine so last night took the plunge and put her back in with the babies. Went up to check on things after dark and the silly little poppet was waiting in the run for us to take her back inside felt so mean putting her in with the other three little ones as she kept ckucking at us and coming back out, left her again for a while and she obviously got bored/chilly so climbed into the makeshift coup with the rest of them! Bit twitchy at first, the hybrid girls were VERY interested in seeing her back again, so they'd obviously noticed that there was one missing last week, some posturing at the mesh but nothing seemed to bother nutty in the slightest. Will be keeping them segregated for a while longer though methinks... But finally, our house no longer smells of chicken poo!! HOORAY!!!!!
