There is a sticky at the top of this section, called recommend your local breeder. Not sure if there's anything near you on there. Alternatively, give Omlet a ring and they should be able to tell you of any they know about. Are you in the delivery area for Omlet to supply chickens? I found it a great introduction to keeping them (never having had them before) as Dan, the guy who delivered them, showed me how to handle them, clip wings etc. Do tell us when you are getting your Eglu and what colour etc. We're friendly here.... but very nosey! No, we are not in the chicken delivery range for Omlet, but they did send a list of suppliers in West Yorkshire, which we will look into. We would also like to use the forum to contact anyone locally with chickens to compare notes with and possibly visit to learn at first hand the delights of keeping hens. We used one bloke up near Keighley who was wuite good and when we got out Marran we used http://www.glencroftpoultry.co.uk/ They were really nice and friendly woth a good range and well looke after birds. chocchick Posted December 31, 2006 Share Posted December 31, 2006 We are in Sheffield (I think fairly near) and have used http://www.storrspoultry.co.uk/ They have Warrens, Black rocks and Speckeledys in at the moment (hybrids-good for starting). My new purebreed girls are from there. They have bantams as well. Storrs is up a very long (5-10 min drive) mud track, buildings look a bit bleak, VERY muddy but they have quite a good selection. I would say check the beak, toes, face and feathers for damage. Trinny had a chipped beak which we didn't realise at the time, I've seen funny toes and tail-less chickens that have been pecked before. Make a note about what the chickens are vaccinated against and you want point of lay, at Storrs they take that as 18 weeks when they are probably a bit younger, not literally about to lay. A bit older would be easier as they would squat so you can catch them. Warrens e.g. at Storrs are lovely little brown birds. Bethin my album was an ISA Warren (similar). In fact we got her from Regency Poultry (T Beebee from Practical Poultry magazine breeds Polish but can sometimes get Isa Warrens and dropped Beth off in Sheffield for us-he's in Chesterfield). My OH works in Cleckheaton and has 168 mile journey to work I need some help, I just seem to be trawling right move all the time. Houses seem so expensive up there. Anything in a nice village is a good £100k to £200K more than our nice house South! Areas I like the look of are Notton, Ripponden, Holmfirth. Is there any that I perhaps have not thought off. I have got a 9 year old so a decent school catchment area is important. He has been telling me for the past 2 years I can have a nice little farm house and a bit of land for what we have here. Not from what I have seen. I had visions of a nice Emmerdale setting, not the middle of an estate! I need to find an undiscovered village that has not undergone a massive price hike! mark.pedlar Posted November 7, 2015 Author Share Posted November 7, 2015 Since getting advice from the forum nearly 8 years ago, we've been keeping hens in Wakefield successfully. The children, now teenagers, have learnt so much from them, and we've all enjoyed the eggs. Thank you to those of you who gave advice. However, our current 3 hens have stopped laying or are only laying intermittently. We fancy a break from keeping hens so we can properly clean the Eglu and rearrange the garden etc. Could anyone advise on how or to whom we could pass on our 3 hens in our area.
