jonesyboy27
HI happy New Year to one and all. My girls arrived and merrily scoffed the pellets,we also feed the local birds high energy feed, the girls have the taste for this and now ingnore the pelletts. I have washed the dish and changed the pellets to no avail. Am I doing something wrong? Any solutions, please? Regards Jonesyboy
Cinnamon
How about a bird table - one that the hens cannot fly up to & nab the wild bird food?
Mrs Frugal
They don't seem to like pellets much, do they. Mine won't touch them either. There are a couple of things you can try which might help. One is to try mixing a little warm water or some natural bio yogurt with them to make a porridge type feed. This is often a bit more appetising to them. Another is to not give them any treats at all so that the pellets are all they have available - the theory being that when they are hungry enough, they'll eat them. The last thing I can think of is to cut your losses and switch to layers mash instead! Mine ADORE this. It comes in two types - co"Ooops, word censored!" and fine. Mine have the co"Ooops, word censored!" mash which looks exactly like a bowl of muesli when poured out as it has lots of dried peas, corn, wheat flakes etc in and gives the hens more interesting things to peck at. It's messy though and they will flick it everywhere to get to the tasty bits so be warned! Hope this helps a bit. It's so frustrating when the blighters won't eat, isn't it. Good luck!! Charlottechicken
Mine are happy with the pellets, once they realised they weren't going to get anything else. They really like the pellets off the ground though so I sprinkle a handful on the floor and they happily peck 'em up! Mind you mine now have quite a structured day food wise. At first they would only eat treats, I think they ate 100g of pellets a month each when I first had them , they filled up on ants, snails, slugs and all my plants. Don't worry too much though, they will eat what is on offer when they get hungry enough. A belly full of pellets is better than a rumbling tummy
Guest
You could add some of the bird food to the pellets to make them more interesting.

kannie
Don't worry too much though, they will eat what is on offer when they get hungry enough.A belly full of pellets is better than a rumbling tummy Not always - Maisy decided that she didn't like pellets and just stopped eating them, even in porridge form. They have very few treats and she was just existing on leafy s"Ooops, word censored!"s alone! Finally she got so thin and light I had to try the mash, and that was the answer: she tucked in like there was no tomorrow, and hasn't looked back since. We use the fine mash though, not the co"Ooops, word censored!" stuff.
