E-Reader - price cut

Recommended Posts

I was in John Lewis the other day and they have already cut the price of the new pocket reader. Its down to £149 - still £25 more in other places. I have a feeling in my water that these will be in short supply in a month or so - very tempted to buy a couple of spares to fund Xmas but didn't.

I did buy myself a rather snazzy one in pink though. I felt guilt free as during the week I won £300 of shopping vouchers for another shopping centre. Although I couldn't by the e-reader with the vouchers I knew Mum was happy to buy some of the vouchers off me as there is some stuff she wants in the M&S outlet.

Now I don't have to steal mums reader anymore!

Yes total result - don't even have to splurge as I can borrow them from my local library - and unlike their paper counterparts I can't keep them too long and get fined!

Only downer is there is not yet a waterproof cover for this version but I used a ziploc bag when I wanted to read in the bath instead.

I am truly torn on this one.

I love books & own way to many,my shelves are groaning & here in my office I have piles of books on the floor all around me as the book cases are all full.

And I love gadgetry too.

But something just doesn't feel right about an e reader to me.I keep wavering about getting one, keep nearly, nearly ordering one, then I back out.................

First excuse was the price, the I was waiting for the Kindle.........................now I hear Apple are launching one in the new year to run off i-tunes

What I really need is for someone to buy me one for Christmas :whistle::whistle:

I decided against the Kindle with all it's buttons and having to download from them and PAY them for all the books.

I suspect the Apple version will work out pricey if you have to use I-tunes.

I've managed to get a fair few books already at my kinda price (free!) and as I said there are no fines for being late back!

It's NOTHING like staring at a screen they use "E-Ink" technology and the screen doesnt' glare and looks white when switched off - really put it next to a computer and there is a world of difference. Next time you are in town pop into Curry's - they have them there and will demo them for you.

Love, love, LOVE mine!!! So many books available free to download that I have not bought any since June which probably means I've saved about as much money as the reader cost in the first place!!! Now when I read a "real" book (someone lent me some the other day), it annoys me that I have to put in a bookmark whenever I stop and it won't just slip into my (small) handbag!

Have you downloaded any free books other than the free classics that you can get. I have all of those (doubt I will ever read them all though). Do you have anywhere that you can get more up to date books? I have the Sony Pocket Reader and love it. Have put the cover and light plus the silicone case on my Christmas list. I am hoping that the silicone case will make reading in the bath without a ziploc bag an option

The silicone case won't do that - it doesn't have a front so to speak. You can for the older ones buy a custom made waterproof pouch but they aren't yet available for the new sizes linky

But today I picked up these from Lakeland - had to get them ordered into store as they are a summer item but they show in stock on the website. The middle sized one is perfect for my pocket reader.

Try these websites:

http://www.truly-free.org/ "The Burgomeister" operates a free lending library...you can download up to two books a week, and then you delete them when you have read them. Almost all modern books but rather an eclectic selection as they represent the burgomeister's own bookshelves, which he has scanned and made available to download, plus others contributed by his dedicated fans.

http://manybooks.net/ Most of the free classics but also quite a few modern books that are published under Creative Commons, sci-fi stuff is often so published as the authors are more likely to embrace the concept of e-books!

There are also books available on various torrent download sites but these are illegally copied and are of doubtful quality sometimes...depends on your view of whether it is acceptable to download such copies.

All these are worth checking out on your computer and adjusting the size of the font if needed before transferring to your reader as sometimes there are oddities!

Darn it! Managed to stop MIL who was off to John Lewis to buy one for me for Christmas, phew. Do you actually have the pouches from Lakeland? If they are good, I'll get one.

I do have the lakeland pouches and the medium sized one is a near perfect fit for my pocket e-book. But I can't turn it on and off in the pouch as that involves too much nail action and might pierce it - but that could be because I have acrylics.
