It's quite exciting. I wasn't expecting any of our little girls to come into lay before Christmas, really. But Blodwyn is definitely getting red on her face now, and it is getting more noticeable day by day. Gwennie is getting a comb and wattles now, and Megan is slightly red round the eye too.

 

So, maybe Blodwyn will oblige before Christmas after all! How exciting!! Particularly since DH has promised eggs to all and sundry before a single one has been laid.

I have one that is a late starter but she is getting red round the comb and wattles now.

 

I have another one who has been showing signs of being about to start laying (crouching and getting very vocal) for about two weeks now so hopefully soon.

Sounds like you may just be lucky - they take a lot longer to get to the next stage at this time of year though.

 

I got some new pure breed banty pullets at the end of September last year, they looked ready to lay for ages and finally dropped the first egg early in January.

Blodwyn got very vocal yesterday. Usually when there is a cat about or a bird of prey or something they all go Bwaaark Bok Bok! But yesterday only Blodwyn was doing it. They were all out in the garden and I heard a noise and there was Blodwyn making a racket.

 

Then it occurred to me...she might actually have laid an egg somewhere hidden and mysterious!

 

I might go on an egg hunt when it stops raining....her face is definitely red now!

I got really excited this morning because after her first feed, Blodwyn disappeared back into the cube! But no egg (unless a little one has slipped through into the poo tray). The wait is quite agonising.

We missed her yesterday as we were out all day, but she is regularly going in and out of the cube in the morning now. Fingers crossed!

Ooh - no egg but when I just popped out to put them in the Cube run because it was raining Blodwyn crouched when I went to pick her up! I had to pick them up because they'd decided that under the trailer was much better than the run and they wouldn't come out even for corn

Not yet, but she's crouching even if I give her a slight touch (to keep her in the run while I'm putting in food and grit). She did a really good one this morning. Oh come on Blodwyn!!!

The race is really on now! Megan is crouching too - this makes getting them back into the run a lot easier

Don't worry Gelbel, some girls never crouch... it's beneath their dignity. Don't forget too that everything takes longer at this time of year when there's less daylight.
