Dislocated chicken wing.....it went pop!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I went out to my girls to put them away this afternoon, they had been playing out for quite a while. I noticed Shirley, my Black Rock, holding her left wing away from her side.

We managed to catch her and inspect her. We couldn't find a wound but as I straightened her wing out and prodded along it, and there was a loud pop!

I think it had been dislocated at the elbow and I popped it back in :vom: , she didn't even struggle bless her.

She is still holding it away from her body but not as far. I thought it might be dislocated at the shoulder as well, but I can't feel anything. Is she just holding it strangely because the muscles are injured?

Has anyone else had any experience with this before?

 Not at all. I guess the pop could be a tendon moving over bone as you put it back. Well done  . If she had dislocated it then there could be a bit of swelling or nerve involvement, which could be why she's still holding it out.

If I was you I would feel all along the good side first before looking at the other so you know what you are feeling. Have you checked her shoulder, if it is dislocated then sooner than later will make it less traumatic to put back.

Dead impressed you'll be able to get a job in casualty.

Hope she is ok in the morning  .

Well done you :D , sounds like a dislocation to me. Give her some Arnica and if it hasn't improved on Monday then take her to the vet to get it checked. Those two joints should rotate fairly freely, so any restriction of movement (compare it with another chook) would probbaly indicate that she's damaged it.

She may have caught it on summat when she was flapping about.

Thank you all for your advice.

I had forgotten about the arnica in my shock. I will get some of that down her in morning, and if she's still struggling on Monday get her to the vet for some anti-inflammatories.

I'll keep you all updated on her progress.

Update from this morning:

I went to let them out to play about an hour and a half ago. If I hadn't been looking for it, I don't think I would have seen anything different about that wing today. She is holding it just slightly further out from her body than the other side.

She grumbled a fair bit when I inspected her today, which is much more like her usual character  . I am just hoping now, that it is only bruised and swollen, and will be completely back to normal in a couple of days  .

OH of course is blaming Bill for being too rough with the girls, and using it as another excuse to wring his neck  . The joys of keeping chooks and OH happy at the same time eh? .

I hope it wasn't Bills fault :? , but he is extremely big now, and the most ungainly fellow I've ever seen  . He often loses his balance and falls off when he is treading the girls, so he may have caught a wing in the process of this :( .

Shaun is gunning for him now, and making sure it's not happening to any of the other girls.

:shock: Blimey, was she doing a Lesley Ash?

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Aww, poor Bill, I hope it wasnt him :( just make sure Shaun holds fire until you know for certain, then take the gun off him :)

I'm sure he's just getting the blame for Shirley falling off a fence or something  . Poor old Bill :( , don't worry, he's under my protection :x , OH is all talk.

Glad to hear his fan club is growing  , even the neighbours all love him, and I thought he would drive them crackers.

Even OH had to admit, when we came back from countryside live, that he didn't see any cockerels as pretty and stunning as Bill :D .

I think it it just a personality clash between the pair of them. I swear I can see the pair of them eyeballing each other across the garden  . You wouldn't believe one is a human and one is a chicken, it's just two blokes, each trying to be top dog.

It's very funny, as of course, I am the boss :lol::lol::lol::lol: .
