OH is complaining his clothes smell musky because they were left in the washing machine too long and stayed damp and got fusty.

 

Does anyone know of anything you can rewash them with at 30-40 to unmusk/unfust them? Or any other treatments to un-dank clothes? And if you do, where can you get it? Big supermarkets don't seem to have anything. Can't mega-hot wash stuff of it will shrink or die.

Same here, I just wash them again, but tend to add a bit more washing powder

Did a bit of googling and found several independent sources talking about washing with a little vinegar. Here's the most detailed I found.

Put some bicarbonate of soda in the washing macine and run it through then re wash on a quick wash the clothes putting in a tablespoon of bicarb witht he powder/ liquid as it takes out the smell.

You really dont want to do chemicals anyway as the old fashioned ways really work , vinegar or bicarb are the answer.

Put some eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil inthe fabric softener dispenser compartment....lovely.

I usually re-wash the load.

 

I had this problem with my washing machine. I used to be able to leave things in there for a couple of days but then they started to smell horrible quicker. After a bit of internet research, I found out that there were a couple of things causing it

 

1: the washing liquid I was using was a bio one, but as it was liquid it didn't have the chemicals in it to clean out of the machine properly and so there was a build up of the washing liquid

2: the machine needs to have a hot wash about once a month, using washing soda crystals in the drawer for one wash and then vinegar in the drum.

 

After doing that, I have found my machine is much better and the clothes no longer have that horrible smell

I find a good squeeze of fairy & a 30deg quick wash usually does the trick, then stick it out on the line asap ........we use non-bio powder, & do wash our towels & sheets on 60deg, does that constitute a hot wash or would the washing soda/vinegar wash be even hotter to sweeten the machine ?

For the hot clean the machine wash I do mine on the highest setting which I think is about 90. My normal washing temps are 60 for whites, bedding and towels; 40 for colours and darks.

I haven't had the problem, but if I do in the future I now have all the answers

We do get mold in a couple of patches on our bedroom wall though, which we remove but they always come back. It is a north facing room, so I think there is very little we can do to get rid of it for good. The window is always open at night and most of the day too, with a little heating in the winter.
