HENthusiastic
I heard an interesting fact about Bees on radio 4 today. Aparently there are hundreds of different types of Bee, but only about 3 types actually make honey. Aparently the others focus on chutneys, pickles and baking

Somerford
It's true - in the UK we have solitary bees (Mason Bees and the like) that bore holes in old walls and lay a single egg, store honey/pollen for it, then lay another egg in front and so on. There are also 'local' versions of the honey bee (all described by their latin name). Ours is Apis mellifera. You can also get Apis cerana (Asian type), Apis dorsata (Giant Honeybee), Apis florea (Dwarf honeybee) as well as many 100s of bumblebees ! I'd be interested in buying some from them over the festive period if they have any surplus.

HENthusiastic
Good point. A good wholesome winter hobby, chutney making., That'll help keep them warm over the cold snaps
