Andrew's
Hello all. So, after my thread about plucking, [ viewtopic.php?f=5&t=44772 ] I have red mited them, added some lovely additive to their water and most recently added Poultry spice to their food. Still, one of my girls still sports a bald bum. I did notice that my gingernut happens to eat Miss Pepper-pots plucked feathers? A couple of weeks ago, around 6am, I heard them going crazy - looked out the window and that not so fantastic Mr.Fox was on top of the Eglu Needless to say I gave it a piece of my mind, Literally two days later, he had been back! I have since bought a winter cover, and the girls are still laying and eating, so I assume this attack didn't worry them too much......... Anyway, that's where I am with it all, and I have just passed our x2 year anniversary with our feathery friends Edited November 12, 2009 by Guest

Andrew's
I did try some anti peck spray, it didn't really work and it is very difficult to apply
Andrew's
Those damned foxes! There were four of them screaming in the street last night, fighting and chasing each other through front gardens for about 3 minutes before retreating to the undergrowth. They are beginning to irritate me now
Andrew's
I realise I am top poster, on my own post - lol. Foxes: Pulled up a stapled membrane that is buried under 4" of dense wood chipping's! http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1556.jpg http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1555.jpg Other scratching damage: http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1557.jpg http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1558.jpg Another issue is my Gingernut ranger picking on my Miss Pepperpot http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1560.jpg http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x150/GOLFN76/IMG_1563.jpg Worse than ever loss of feathers and seemingly lots of pecking and taunting going on. I have tried lots of thing's to aid health and prevent pecking but I think my gingernut is a bully. So I figure my options are, give either of the chickens away. Or I get more chickens to even things out a little [also open to advice]. Help?
Plum
See your Pepperpot is moulting and has a sore behind her leg. It may be she's not so much picking on her as pecking the red skin which they cant help themselves. Have you tried purple spray and I think I would consider a bumper bit until the pepperpot is refeathered.
Andrew's
Purple spray is not one I have tried. I am inclined to think it is the gingernut as not only did I witness some deliberate pecking of the bare bits, but miss pepperpot has feathers missing around her neck......... I will get some purple spray ordered and see if I can get her mended.... Cheers Andrew P.S I approve of the idea of adopting ex-battery, where did you source yours from plum? Plum
My exbats are not mine just on their hols, but actually not that now better take them off my sig, they came from BHWT Coventry.http://www.bhwt.org.uk/ Still reckon your pepperpot is moulting, but can see lots of new feathers growing The purple spray just disguises the red so they don't want to peck it. My gingernut struggled to lay an egg yesterday and the pepperpot pecked her bum making it bleed. She keeps looking at it but when I cleaned her and put the purple spray on she had a look but left it alone so reckon it works. It's also antiseptic. Chicken Shirl
I agree with plum. The pepperpot looks to be moulting. Use the purple spray as she say's and things should settle down. Good luck with them. They are both lovely hens.
