Driving licence photo renewal, bit of a rant- update!

Recommended Posts

Its 10 years since we moved to this house & had to replace our lovely pink :P paper licences with the nasty plastic photocard one. I've just forked out £40 to have our photos updated, & we don't really look all that different now as then :?

I went to get the envelope to the DVLC weighed at a local post office & the counter lady thought that I was mad for not wanting to spend £4.99 on sending the forms off by special delivery. I spent 39p instead for 1st class post  If the renewal forms do get lost then I reckoned I would be no worse off, apart from having to complete the forms again & pay another 39p postage :? At the most I would send them recorded delivery.

I was especially determined not to use special delivery as we recently renewed Alex's passport (£49  ) and my mum posted the forms off for me & got conned into sending them special delivery.

Is the post office on some kind of special delivery commission?

I have used it for sending passports because it includes checks on all the info and photos by the Post Office - the Passport Office return things for the slightest of reasons. We know how often they send stuff back and make people start again because Carrl often signs the photos for people......and he has had to do them 3 times for one person

I would imagine the Licence people could be just as picky?

Its not the same as the check & send passport service ( which I also think is a rip off. Complete your passport renewal on-line & its then sent out to you in hard copy for signatures & photos- a doddley way to renew, & if anything is not completed correctly whilst filling out the fields you get an on-line prompt) I think check & send also costs about £7, which includes the special delivery posting as well as the check.

To renew the photo on my driving licence only involved a new photo & my signature on the form, plus sending back the licence & its counterpart. I think what my gripe is is that it costs me enough money to actually renew these important things, without me having to spend more money to get the forms posted off :evil::evil::wink::D

Er, I've still got a green one - it's falling apart a bit, but yuk - don't want my photo done.

Yep I have my original one its sellotaped together in my purse as a few places still insist ie going abroad for car hire to see the original one.1981

I cant be bothered to keep renewing it too

Our licences turned up safely one week & one day after we sent them off for renewal :D

Glad to hear it. Mine is due for renewal in a couple of years, and I'm really terrified that they'll miss the motorcycle entitlement off it.

Several friends who ride motorbikes have renewed their licences only to find they left off Group A entitlement. Despite the fact that they'd been riding for years, in one case as part of his job, they had to re-take the full motorcycle test to get their licence back. It has been happening so often that you wonder whether this is being done deliberately to get motorcyclists off the road! They won't accept a photocopy of the licence as proof that you have motorcycle entitlement.

I've noticed that I've been short-dated on the licence :(

Unlike the renewal of a passport, which is always renewed 10 years from its original expiry date no matter when its sent in for renewal before that, my previous licence was due to expire on 30/11/09 & it has only been renewed till 18/11/19

I won't be so hasty to get it renewed next time
