rabbitfluff
Off to Wickes in a while to get some wood to make some new, less wobbly, roosting bars for the girls, is there a right size for them? The way they're made at the moment they range from about 1" wide to over 3" but they seem to use them all so not sure what they prefer. I was thinking of making them from 2"x2" - do you think that's wide enough? Thanks!
Egluntyne
The Omlet bars are 1" x 1". Just been out with my tape measure. I'm wonderig if 2" x 2" might be a bit too wide.
Tutti Frutti
Measured mine in the wooden coop we bought in the summer and it's 4cm by 4cm with the edges slightly rounded
House MD 221B
If it helps I've made a strange home-made perching system outside in the garden for them to use at will during the day out of trellis which is approx 1" slats, and Egluntyne is right about the Omlet bars, but if they're already happily using anything between 1" and 3" then it should be ok. Do you have any bantams or plan on having any bantams at any point with smaller feet? because then you may want to stick to 1". Hope that's of some use. Slim
Go up the woods and get some branches or pick axe handles are perfect!
rabbitfluff
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking 2" might be too small, but it looks like it's too big! I don't know how big I think their feet are! I'm glad I asked! I went for 38mm as it had nice rounded edges already but I might add a narrower one too because I'm a bit soft and don't want them to be uncomfy! sjp
I know I'm a bit late but 2x2 would have been ok but cls will work which is 38mmx63mm use mine happily perch on 21/2"wide
Redwing
2" wide wth rounded edges s spot on for large fowl, very large can handle 2.5" and bantams smaller IMO the Omlet slats are too small, they do work though as chooks seem to span them with their feet as they are closely spaced but the 1" width on its own would be too narrow
sjp
1" timber is to thin for anything over a foot long 2 x 2 is alright up to about 4' long over that I'd go for CLS or put a leg under the middle
sandyhas3chucks
mine won't use 2 x 2 only same size as omlets. We have an extension on top of back bar as they liked to be up, higher. Originally they had bowls to sleep in with one bar over the front and then they started to roost. when I read 2x 2 was recomended I tried to change it. OMG what a fuss!!!
