I saw Doris actually laying an egg this morning - first time I've seen it in action!

 

Sorry, I had to tell you all as I was really excited by it but boyfriend and brother gave a less than satisfactory response to my news.....they just about mustered a " oh, right , does that mean egg for breakfast"

 

I thought it was MAGIC

I would be excited too, just never seen either of the laydee's actually laying yet. was tempted to get a usb nightvision camera to pop inside the Eglu, can watch them online when I'm out or just to keep an eye on them that way

 

but then I thought that that was going a bit to far and probably a little crazy!!

Mine don't even like being caught dustbathing (I get the 'how dare you' glare), I think they'd pack their beaks and leave if I ever tried to watch them lay an egg If I walk past the eglu and they are on the nest box a head comes around the door and I get glared at!

Christianl I'm soo impressed that an egg was laid into your hand, that really would be exciting!

I've caught three of mine in the act ....the first time it happened I was so surprised, because I had no idea that they laid their eggs standing up.

 

I was also intrigued by the glistening coating which dries almost at once.

Amazing aren't they! I caught Florrie today for the first time, well I was standing by the eglu whilst she was inside (I didn't dare open the egg port in case I disturbed her ) - she made a funny purring/chirring sound, then came trotting out. When I opened the egg port there it was - still steaming! I was so excited, and no one else seemed bothered.

 

What really tickles me, is that when she goes in to lay, the other 3 all stand outside the eglu preening. Then when she comes out, they all go back to foraging again.

I like it when you look in the run and you can see them sitting on the nest box and they peep their little heads around the corner as if to say "look what im doing mummy" ....

Our Gingy always used to stand by the eglu door and make lovely little noises when Babs laid an egg, sometimes she would be there for ages if Babs decided to take her time - I think Babs still misses this as our new girls aren't as loyal to Babs as our beautiful Gingy was
