Chicken health products - what to get?

Recommended Posts

Can I just ask people for advice on what Nettex products to get. You will see on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=47833&start=300 (page 21) I won £100 of free NetTex products at the National Poultry Show and I know need to decide how to spend it.

Anyone use the products and got recommendations - I thought this might get more readers here than in 'Get Togethers'.

Congratulations!

I would lean towards getting a couple of things each of items that I would find it hard to easily find in the future and those that I might need in an emergency

for example mite powder, tonics and disinfectant will always be needed by routine so are probably part of your normal monthly spend anyway so I would spend the money on things like the nutridops which are normally about £10 so I would get a couple of those

The total mite kill will be off the shelves for a while so its worth grabbing

I would also get the scaly leg spray as its another thing that might be hard to get hold of locally in an emergency

The sterilising spray is supposed to be very good and is useful if you get an ill hen who needs her quarters and bowls really really clean

The vitamin powder with probiotic could also be used on an ill chicken

so my list would be:

Nutridrops x 2

total mite kill x 2

Vitamin powder

scaly leg spray

sterilising spray x 2

anti peck spray

On the other hand you could buy a product that you always use in a large quantity like the tonic where you wouldnt necessaily have the money for a big bottle although you know its the most economical overall

Is the choice restricted to their 'backyard poultry keeper' type range? they do have an enormous range of other pet products not in the fancy packaged range which might offer more choice and value

Shame it's restricted to that range, as they do a brilliant louse powder in the regular livestock range, it contains permethrin, so not licensed for use actually on chooks, but an old farmer friend recommended it to me and I dust it in the housing using a squeezy bottle with a hole in the stopper so that I can 'poot' it into the crevices.

Redwing's list is what I'd get too.

 will you have room to store them all?

I got some bits to give to a colleague who keeps chickens - I know I currently have 17, but with the 'normal' 6 layers this lot should keep me going for a while. They are all getting poultry drink now, not just the youngsters as I will have all this extra liquid tonic - I might also be a bit more generous with the poultry spice over the winter knowing I have a kg of this alternative to use as well.

Well I have now opened up all the packets and will report back as I use the goodies.

The liquid tonic, even the big size, has a handy little measuring pot - so a bit more acurate than my normal splash of poultry drink. 5ml is enough for 4.5l of water - the 100ml size has a 5ml measure, so good for doing 4.5l at a time. On the biggest size the measuring thing is 10 - 25ml, so probably easier for mixing up larger quantities at a time. As with the poultry drink, I usually use a small size as it is easy to pour, but buy a bigger one to top it up. I can see doing the same with this one - the big size being in the chicken store and using the smaller one for measuring/pouring.

Will let you know what they think of it.
