Shock energy bill!!

Recommended Posts

I've just had a look at my energy bill covering the last three months, and it's £44 less than the same time last year  The electric is £20 cheaper and the gas £24 cheaper.

I've had the heating on since the start of the charging period, 1st September, but the whole bill for three months gas and electric is £134.58. I give readings once a month so I know the figures are right. All I can think is my new fridge, freezer, oven and boiler are much more efficient than the 14 year old models I replaced, and last year I had just had an extension of the kitchen so must have used extra heat drying the building out and keeping the damp room warm :? I have been turning radiators off in rooms when I exit them for the final time in the evening, and have tried to become a little more organised regarding room usage, just as you would if you had no central heating, and I confess my house is anything but toasty, but £44 is brilliant :D

I really can't believe it and if I can keep this up I will have my direct debits reduced again in March

Wow - that is impressive! I'd like to think my bills have gone down since I had the woodburner installed, but in reality I only light it at weekends or on the odd evening when I'm not going out (fairly rarely at the moment) and it has been too mild to light it very often. I need the heating on in the mornings anyway.

I've just signed up for something called Energy Smart with British Gas - it means I'll have to submit my own meter readings once a month, is that what you do? I'm hoping it means I'll be a bit more in control of what I use.

Yes Olly, that's what I do, but I'm with Eon. You can compare your usage with the previous year with graphs so it makes it more interesting. The chart for my electric usage is intriguing, it is almost the same for every month, there's virtually no seasonal variation :?

My brother is doing something technical (appraisal) with energy meters and he's had one at home for work purposes. He says the biggest saving (after decent insulation, no damp or drafts, don't be unduly wasteful etc etc) is to have A rated appliances - although of course you have the initial outlay.

That makes sense then Daphne, all my new appliances were the best rating I could get for my budget, several A's and I think the boiler is a B. I reckon I've saved over £100 in electric at least in the past year, and the four appliances (fridge, freezer, cooker and boiler) totalled at around £1150.
