4Clucks-minusOne
I've noticed that when my chickens have laid and come out of the eglu or run they pick up leaves or twigs and throw them behind themselves. Why? Anyone else seen this?
Egluntyne
They are nesting. It isn't unusual.
Chicken Shirl
All mine do it, it's so cute. Broody's do it as well when you bring them off their nest.
skye
Ahhhh I love it when my Yolko does that I love watching her on a sunny spring morning after a spell on the nest, sauntering down the garden throwing bits of long grass and sticks over her back It's very instinctive I think. Lovely skye x
chelsea
Out of my 6 girls only my Maran does it.
4Clucks-minusOne
Glad to hear others chickens do it too. What is odd is the fact they are walking all the time they are throwing bits over their shoulder......pretty big nest!

jlo
I hadn't noticed them doing it but had wondered where all the leaves in the nesting box had come from. Thanks for this
mostin
Awwwwwww, I remember the first time I saw one of my girls doing this, I couldn't work out what on earth she was going . I have a couple of my girls who do this after laying their eggs, I think it's so sweet. They are obviously so proud of themselves, and trying to build a better nest. Sometimes one of them throws so much in her back she looks like a little mobile compost heap for a few minutes . it is so weird how on;y certain ones do it though
coco
Lily one of my ex batts did this not long after I got her, She was standing in the doorway of their house throwing shavings over her back. I've seen my broody hen do it as well.
