surprise chinchilla baby

Recommended Posts

Well, after telling Egluntyne only 24 hours ago that I do not breed my chinchillas - I have found a kit in with Daisy and Blueberry!!! - who are supposed to both be girls.....(unless Elvis has done the deed on one of his escapes. But I don't think that would have been possible.)

The kit is amazing, 57g so a decent size and loves cuddles already. I am guessing that Blueberry is the mum as a) she came from a reputable breeder, so should have been sexed properly b)Daisy was a rescue so I could have got it wrong and c) while I was watching 'she' was trying to mount Blueberry. So Daisy may have to become Derek (or perhaps Olly 8) )

Not seen the baby suckle yet, I have tried syringe feeding but it didn't seem bothered so I am hoping it is feeding OK and just wasn't hungry.

I have separated Blueberry and baby away from Daisy and put a portable radiator next to the cage for warmth. Just keeping my fingers crossed all is OK. A rescue rabbit I fostered a few years ago had surprise babies (the women the RSPCA took her from had kept her with her son) and all three died  so I am constantly checking on them. Even missed most of the X-Factor!!!

Ok Jules - tell Alihodg that it is horrible

But it might take a while for your Pinocchio nose to go down.....

I am pleased to say baby is putting on weight daily and feeding well from mum. It is absolutely georgeous! Hard to get photos as the chins are in the garage where they are safe but the lighting is not good for piccies. Will have a go though - I am such a proud gran!

well, at last, I have worked out how to add photos! Apolgies for the quality - and, in less than 3 weeks, Cobweb's weight has doubled so I will try and get a better and more up to date pic. But this is at a few days old....
