Lydia
As is so often the case I was awake having my morning think at 3.30 am this morning. I heard the bolt of my chicken run rattle and knew it was either human or fox interference. It was the latter. I observed it walk right past 2 Foxwatches, which were definitely working, stop to have a wee at the end of the garden before I was out the back door in my nightie chasing it off (fruitless I know....but it made me feel better!). I'm not knocking Foxwatches - this is the first time we've seen a fox in our garden since we installed them - but reiterating the fact that they are a deterent only and not 100% failsafe. Obviously this fox is deaf or in some way immune - it can happen. For me it doesn't change anything much; our girls are secure in their run (the door has more than the bolt to lock it) and are never left alone when freeranging. I will be extra vigilant now though knowing we have Immune Fox sniffing around, and change that bolt for something even more secure. Now the weather is colder and food is more sc"Ooops, word censored!" please please look out for your girls and don't rely on deterents to keep them away. Foxes are clever and quick and very very common night and day even in the most populated of housing estates.
Toots
I think I read on this site somewhere that as foxes get more desperate for food they are willing to 'tolerate’ more and pain/discomfort from the fox watches etc.
The Dogmother
'tis true, and the pregnant vixens will need even more food as they get close to whelping.
Olly
A very timely reminder - if it's a hard winter, and some very cold weather is forecast for the next week or so, then the foxes will be desperate for food. A secure, fenced run is the only solution in my view.
mostin
Thank's for the mental kick up the prevebial , we all get a bit slack in our security from time to time, and it only takes one slip up, and then you're very sorry .
