Warm mash mix and they won't touch it!

Recommended Posts

My girls won't touch my warm mash, ingrates! I made them warm weetabix and porridge mix this morning before I left for school - they hadn't touched it when I left at 7.15 for school. I know it was dark, but it was lovely and warm, when I got back tonight it was still there - frozen and untouched! Another cold morning I'd given them their pellets warmed up with warm water, a little grated cheese and cooked potato - they weren't impressed with that either.

I don't know if it's because its in a dish rather than there Omlet grub? I'm going to have another go tomorrow as I'm off work so can at least see them as it will be daylight!

Any recipe suggestions? :D

How long have you had them, I know that my youngsters have to be 'taught' how to eat treats as they are only used to pellets!

To get them round it I mixed up some porridge and crumbled it on the floor of the run which attracted their attention and they pecked at it

then once they were used to the taste and texture I put a bowl down and they cleared it

Strangely I have noticed that if something is in a bowl with a 'flat' top they are less likely to peck at it than if its crumbly and messy on a plate....strange days....

mine wont eat the pellets with warm water no matter what i add! they will eat hot water poured on the cheapest oats though, :D and like docsquid, they eat it best when mixed with other bits (cooked veg peelings, sweetcorn, corn) especially mealworms

today as a special bedtime treat, and to fetch them in from playing out in the snow (yes  mine enjoy it :o )they had fruit and nut museli :!: wont mention that to the OH :lol:

How funny that they should turn their beaks up ..... naught girls. My lot love just hot water and pellets alone. I find that they actually prefer a dish as they've had the same silver dog bowl for nearly 3 years and they only have to see the bowl in my hands to go into a frenzy and know that it contains treats...

I tried pellets, porridge oats, chopped sultanas (which they love) peas mixed with warm water and garnished with some corn to entice them in! They have pecked away at this more, although there is suspicion over the peas (convinced that I'm trying to poison them), this was more promising I just need to add more oats! I used a snow coloured bowl today! They are worse than my children! It is nice to see them in daylight though.

Mine have been awkward just lately. They like a drip tray from a flower pot - the dish that they used to have without problems was discarded because the chicks had the little orange dish. So now they have a little orange dish. The wonderful fat ball thingies that I made as per Redwing's recipe have been ignored - but the blackbird thinks they're great. Although they did seem pretty keen on the pellet porridge this morning - probably because I put a bit of Avipro on it - they wolf it down then.

Mine love peas! I always have to cook twice as many as we need to allow for the hens and the goldfish!
