Tutti Frutti
http://www.ho"Ooops, word censored!"erbottles.net/ It's like a Snugglesafe but cheaper (under a tenner online) but I can't seem to find how long it stays warm for and delivery would be a few days! Or I can get a Snugglesafe today at Pets At Home (if they're in stock?) for twice the money (I'm not rich but would spend it on my girls!). If anyone in Omlet-land uses a Hottie, I'd love to hear your views please! If anyone has both and can give a comparison, that'd be fantastic! Thank you! Egluntyne
Is the cover removable? I wouldn't fancy a fabric cover in with the chicken poo. I suppose you could put it in a plastic bag, but it would have to be placed where the hens can't peck at it. The Snugglesafe cover is removable, and the Snugglesafe itself can be easily wiped clean. Still, quite a difference in price.
jackthelad
I have got a couple of hotties I breed persian cats and use them in with kittens. The cover is removable to wash. I have seen them for sale in Sainsburys on the chemist/tablet isle although I did buy them on line and they have lasted for years.

Lewis
What about just using those cheaper hand warmers you can get? Here. You just click them to heat up and then put them in boiling water to re-use them. Might give one a try tonight if I can find them ... they're sealed so you could maybe put one in a glug aswell to stop it freezing?

Space Chick
Great idea Lewis, however, I use these for football, and they don't stay hot for long. I need one per half
Lewis
Ah ok ... no good then Father used it on his back when he slipped the disks so I didn't know how long they lasted ... can't find it now - typical
xScrunchee
I have sent an email to the company asking them how long the hotties stay warm for. I will let you know as soon as I hear back
Ginfiend
I use a hot water bottle from Asda - cost me £2. I've been wrapping it in a tea-towel then a plastic bag and sticking it in the poo-tray. It's kept my 2 ladies cosy and happy - they've been laying all through the cold snap. I'd love a Snugglesafe, but beyond my budget at the moment...can't complain about the cheap hot water bottle though!
Redwing
I have some of those 'clicky' handwarmers Lewis they arent bad at all for keeping the drinkers frost free for a while at least, about two hours seems the maximum I try not to use them as they are a faff to boil and tend to just try to change the drinkers if I can

My three wont even let me shut the door (checked for mite) and are often laying one each a day. I have thrown loads of bedding in the eglu as extra padding though. Bad chicken mum???? I'm too soft AND... two of mine are ex-barn hens, both with completely bald bellies and they've been shivering so I'm feeling sorry for them They have me wrapped around their little fingers I have sent an email to the company asking them how long the hotties stay warm for. I will let you know as soon as I hear back Thank you! Now, why didn't I think of that??? What about just using those cheaper hand warmers you can get? they don't stay hot for long. Good idea! I have a couple of these, I wonder if I could make the heat last longer by making insulating, fleecy covers? Hmmmmm I shall have to see! Tutti Frutti
Well, now the worst of the weather's over ( ), I've ordered a Hottie from Amazon for under £8. The girls will get to use in in the next cold spell. Meanwhile, I'll use it for my back - too much skateboarding on my Wii Fit+ !!! Thanks Scrunchie for emailing them. I'll let you know how long they stay warm for...
Tutti Frutti
Right, when I'm using them indoors, they stay lovely and warm (with the cover on - the bags are actually very hot to the touch inside them) for well over a couple of hours. So lovely in fact, that I ordered another one ! They stay "warm" even 4/5 hours later (but by then, "not very") but are definitely cold within 6 hours. Outside in the girls poo tray is a different matter. Temp was just below zero when I put it in at 6pm and the Hottie was cold to the touch (inside the cover) a couple of 2 hours later - but at least the Eglu was snug (and the girls were zonked!). Edited to say, I timed it tonight! I ended up taking the cover off after 3.5hrs to get an extra half hour out of it, so 4 hours max I reckon. sandyhas3chucks
a snugglesafe on the other hand, tho twice the price,is HOT Stays HOT for 3 hours, before gradually losing it's heat over the next 6- 9 hours. I popped one in the microwave this morning to keep ME warm whilst down the garden with the girls, but once in the greenhouse forgot about it. at 5 pm it was still lovely and warm, and is now still warm 6.45. Won't break, spill, or leak .
Tutti Frutti
I think I'll buy a snugglesafe for the girls and my 17 year-old arthritic tom cat who just won't lie down on the Hottie! Unless I want it, of course, then he races me to it at 2mph
