jill the potter
Felt really really bad over Christmas when, for the first time in 18 months, we had to buy some eggs! OH bought some free range medium eggs - the sort we used to buy - and I have to say I was amazed at how small they were, we must have been eating large to extra large eggs all this time, as compared to Korma & Tikka's eggs they were positively 'titchy'!!!!!! At the moment, understandably, with the cold weather, both the girls are not , as my OH keeps saying, earning their keep!!! I say it's a well earned holiday - or the way the weather has been, more like survival!!! Just wish the snow would now go away as it's no longer pretty and just tiresome. Can't clean the girls out properly as everything is frozen solid which makes me feel even worse for them.............no scratching around, dustbathing and a dirty bed!!! Does anyone else have a problem with the poo tray freezing up? I tried all sorts of things but no luck...I think it was frozen to the ground. Had to clean it out through the egg port - which was not easy!! Also actually found some ice inside the eglu!!!! thought this was not possible???? JM
Our girls are not laying at the moment - I think Winnie has produced a couple of softies in the nest box over the cold weather - but that's all! I'm assuming it's because I'm giving them oats and wheat as well as the pellets (and Daphne has decided that now is the right time to start a moult!! ). When I've bought eggs recently (free-range) what I've noticed is the colour - we boiled some and compared 'our' eggs with the shop bought ones. The yolks in ours were bright orangy yellow, but the shop bought ones were an insipid pinky yellow colour. Ours tasted much better too! We're down to our last egg at the moment, so I'm going to have to buy some more soon. Can't help about the eglu poo tray I'm afraid - but the cube one froze up last week in the really cold weather. How about putting the eglu on some newspapers to give an insulating layer from the ground? Jill
jill the potter
The ground seems to be a bit softer this morning so will try and give them a good clean shortly. Found an egg in the run this morning but it had been eaten !!!! Hope this is not going to be a regular thing. Has anyone else had this sort of thing? I find that trying to clean out the run can be problematic with an eglu. Not a lot of room to manouver. Perhaps I shouldn't have made the siting of it so permanent by putting boards all around to keep the woodchip in. Would love a cube, but it took me over a year to pursuade OH to get the eglu so no chance there!!
