Treekeeper
One of my poor chooks has lost an eye. Not sure how I was out in the garden all day yesterday with them and didn't notice anything wrong. ( I was building my new cube while they free ranged as they usually do at the weekends) Charlie the spaniel came out and had a humphing session with them involves him tootling round the garden making a humphing noise while the chooks follow him about. They all went o bed in the new cube after a few failed attempts like trying to get in from the bottom or the back of the cube! They all came out this am as normal and I didn't notice until she turned towards me and I saw that her eye was closed I caught her and picked her up and took her in to OH who is a nurse and she bathed it in a weak tea solution and told me that the eye was gone. No idea how she did it theres no blood in the cube and she is eating and running round as normal
suebee
How awful!! Poor chook. Poor you too. Wonder how on earth it could have happened, and why?
Chicken Shirl
Oh, poor little thing. Glad she is alright and seems happy.
chelsea
Goodness Wonder how that happened? Do you think she'll need to visit a vet to check her over or does everything look ok? My little Willow is blind in one eye and copes extremely well.
sparkysmum
How awful, so sorry to hear this but I'm sure she will be fine.
Egluntyne
I would urge you to take her to the vet. It could become infected and she may need antibiotics.

Cranfield Kate
my cat only has one eye and copes fine (occasionally bumps into a cupboard door if i open it though) but def take her to the vet - at the least i guess it should be cleaned out with something antiseptic. how RANDOM though
Redwing
Chances are she will fully recover and as others say hens cope with one eye well however she will not get over this without some help so does need a trip to the vet to have it cleaned, checked and some antibiotics prescribed At risk of sounding obvious are you sure the eye has actually gone? one of mine had a bad eye and it looked for all the world that the eye had gone but it actually was there if you see what I mean??? Sarahsausage
Blimey! What a shock and poor hen! Definitely go to the vets ASAP!
Treekeeper
Looks like the eye is still there the swelling has gone down We already have some antibiotics for avian use. So we will start her on a course. Should also mention that OH is qualified to prescribe for humans so luckily she knows what she is doing, she nursed one of our parrots back to full health when the vet wanted to give up on her(the parrot not my wife

Treekeeper
The eye is wide open swelling gone down completely. Totally unbelievable looks like nothing has happened. All I can think is she has banged it or been pecked by another chook. I think we can safely stop the Baytril or was it the old wives remedy of cold tea???
