Smart Feeder - Light sensor values

Ive got five chickens - two Gingernuts, a Light Sussex and two Pekin Bantams - I've been getting three eggs consistently from the three big hens throughout the winter but suddenly from the middle of last week I've had none at all - it seems quite strange that they would all stop laying at the same time, but what's the alternative? I've looked around the garden but can't see that they've laid them anywhere else - and why would they start laying elsewhere after so long?

 

Any ideas?

Well, my 9 all stopped laying within a couple of weeks of each other, so it is possible. I kicked myself for not freezing some when I had a surplus, it's rather embarrassing having to buy eggs when you have 9 chooks

I'd give them all a health check. ie, listen for rattly chests, look them over carefully for signs of lice ( and mites in the Eglu - unlikely at this time of year), and if they haven't been wormed for a while, I'd give them a course of Flubenvet.

 

Also a tonic such as Lifeguard, or some Poultry Spice might help, as will cutting out all treats.

Well we had one yesterday so I guess it's just one of those things! I'll worm them anyway.

 

Thanks for the advice and sympathy! I feel daft as I've given all the eggs away so I'm now on emergency egg rations!!!

can you freeze eggs? can someone tell me how - that is put them in whole or cooked??

We used to freeze eggs, we didn't freeze them whole, my mum Separated the whites from the yolks then put them in separate freezer safe airtight plastic tubs

I know you can freeze them seperately as Raina says, I was going to try beating them and freezing them in batches of 2 or 3 - thinking I could use them for scrambled eggs or baking once defrosted, never tried it though, has anyone else ?

also - is it possible someone is pinching the eggs?

Mine have been laying 2 a day all winter ...now its warming up I am down to 1 a day . if not zero !

And that started last week too. !

Are you in the south or north of the country ?
