I don't see the problem with "crazy requests" to be honest. I have seen eglus, widescreen tv's, games consoles (PS2, xbox etc), surround sound systems, dvd recorders and even cars etc. all offered on our local freecycles so there seems to be a few kind, generous people around.

Some requests may seem cheeky, but there are lots of people around who are lucky enough to have more money than sense and they often throw away very good useable items (because they all always upgrading to the latest gadgets etc.) and without freecycle, these items would probably just end up in landfill or sat in a loft gathering dust, so if just one of these crazy requests gets fulfilled, then in my view it has been worthwhile. I certainly wouldn't begrudge the odd seemingly crazy request or two if it matches someone having a use for something and someone wanting to get rid of something, no matter how much the item was potentially worth. What people request is up to them and it doesn't really have anything to do with me.

I think of freecycle as recycling and saving items from landfill etc, but I also look at it a bit like a charity where you can support local hard working people that are less well off than you by providing them with your donated second hand goods, personally I think it's much more worthwhile than sending money abroad where it often gets squandered into bureaucracy and charity pay rolls etc. Life isn't all about money, it can be quite rewarding to pass on equipment like a hive for example when you are no long want to or no longer fit enough to continue the hobby, at least someone else who has a genuine interest but perhaps not the expendable cash can then get the opportunity to carry on.

I'm a great believer of encouraging more of a caring community spirit, rather than the "looking after yourself" mentality, as I think that is where we have gone wrong in this modern day and age...

I agree with your freecycling enthusiasm in the main cluckingclucker. It's a great service isn't it, fostering community nd avoiding landfill. :D

I think the problem comes when people persistently ask for a big wish list, without manners, and without participating by offering anything, however small, themselves. There is a big difference between genuine need and polite asking and an attack of the gimme-gimmes.

That said, I had an amazing attack of the get-gets earlier this year when a polite response for a baby bath turned into someone giving me the bath, a moses basket and stand, a stack of baby clothes, a top of the range car seat and attachment thingy, a baby bouncer and ridiculously awesome mamas and papas travel system with muffs and rain covers and the like.:D I was gobsmacked and grateful beyond belief. These people had no money, they just wanted to see their stuff looked after and have a second life with people they felt would do that rather than grab without thanks (have you had that happen?! I've had people turn up, walk in, and walk out without even a grunt!) We have kept in touch so they will be kept up to date with my newborn's progress when she arrives, and can see just how much she will love her baths and bedtimes and strolls, and see that their stuff continues to be greatly appreciated. :D

I couldn't agree more. When I am offering things, I only ever get back to the responders who have manners, not the ones who say 'I'll ave that! and the like

I once freecycled some corrugated roofing and the chap who collected it came back with a roll of roofing felt after we'd had a conversation about roofing. I have kept in touch with a couple of responders and consider them friends. And been chatted up by one undesirable who I collected some firewood from.

Our road has a very close community, we are having our 2nd Big Lunch street party this year to raise money for charity, and have started up a street freecycle and a skills register of residents who are happy to help for reduced rates, or free to older residents.

Wanteds on ours have been a car, caravan, TVs (various),laptop.

The greed just astonishes me

Someone once tried to Freecycle their OH and kids on our board - made amusing reading.

I subscribe to two, not sure which one it was on, but could have been your one claret, offering manners!!!

It may well have been the Banbury one, on one of the odd occasions that I wasn't watching it properly.

You get some right weirdos as well as those with plain bad manners. There was one bloke who leapt on everything I offered, then never got back to you to confirm. I complained to the admin about him and he'd done that to several people. I blocked him in the end.

Cluckingclucker - I took this topic to be light hearted, as opposed to moaning about the cheek of some people. :) I have no problem with people asking for anything, as long as they are asking because they actually want the item, and not to make a quick pound or two on ebay or carbooting :shameonu: Some people quite clearly have more money than they know what to do with. I was at my sons new school recently for a new yr 7's meeting, and they told us about the huge box full of ipods, mobile phones, mp3 players, watches etc etc they have in lost property. All expensive items, which quite clearly the parents are not even aware that their son has lost it!
