A glug and grub question

Recommended Posts

Another silly question but....

I got a glug and grug with the cube when it arrived.

I presume the glug is a super glug it has nipples underneath?

How high do I fit it to the WIR? Do they go under and reach up?

Will they know what to do??? :?

Do you fill one half of the grub with grit, or do I need to get another glug/container for that?

Intend to try and fit Kroken rails to the side or make a frame like ANH - realise will be too heavy to go straight onto the wire of the run.

Welocme!

I have to say my lot have never got to grips with the super-glug so I'll leave an expert to answer that one. As for the grub, that's for the layers pellets. I just top it up as needed. The grub needs to be at the height of the back of the hen - if you see what I mean. Some throw food about so you could put a small tray underneath the grub if that turns out to be a problem.

Put grit in a small container - you can get a parrot cup or something from Pets at Home or similar. If they free range they probably won't bother with it. I also tend to throw some down on the floor of the run so they can scratch around for it.

Enjoy!

Well done taking the plunge - want hens have you got/getting?

My girls too weren't too good with the super glug, I ended up buying an ordinary glug, because I just wasn't sure they were getting enough water (I now think they were). I got them to use the super glug by tapping the nipples so they could see the water and they did this ok.

The grub is for their pellets and just need a full wash from time to time otherwise just top it up. Go for the back height of you smallest chicken. Even though my girls free range for part of the week I do have a grit pot - just like patricia w says a parrot cup, they get through a surprising amount too!

hi, I have a super glug and I had to show my girls how to use it by tapping the nipples to make the water come out. Once tey realised, they were at it all the time. I was told that when your hens are drinking from it, their beaks should be vertical so you may need to raise it up when the get older. Hope that helps.

Hi and welcome to chicken keeping, you won't regret it.

Like others have said ours did not get on great with the glug to start with. We tapped it to show them the water.

Because when they first arrive they are sweaty nervous little bundles and we were on tenterhooks we put a plant saucer full of water in the run. They immediately knocked this over, to a lot of clucking and flapping of feathers. What we could have done, of course, was to lower the glug and let them drink out of the top for the first couple of days.

We only use the glug now as a reserve and have settled on an automatic drinker, fed by a water butt. There is a thread on them somewhere on the forum if you are interested.

Things evolve over time some things work for you, others don't but the chickens are pretty resilient.

Best of luck

Hellooo.

Mine used the superglug but they preferred a little plastic drinker (although that rests on a biscuit tin as the aubiose goes flying and fills the tray up and then I have to clean and refill it). Mainly they drink from any dirty puddle they can find in the garden (they free range) in spite of lovely fresh water being available. The Eggy Babes liked to drink from rabbit drinkers - Egg Lou had lots dotted along the side of her cube run. When we got the new eglu, they did rather like the old style glug, so I ordered more.

One of the feeder glugs is filled with grit and oystershell - they scoff more oyster than grit, but the turfed out bits get back into the soil and conditions it nicely, but in the cube run there is a little dish just in case they need some before bed - they get shut in with their tea an hour before they go to bed.

Hi and welcome, how exciting! hope we get to see some pictures when you get your new girlies :D

Mine use the super glug a lot. Yes, we had to show them the nipples with the water coming out but they soon got used to it. Mine also hangs quite high so they almost have to reach up to get a drink. It is also hanging on the wire of the WIR, it is 1" x 1" mesh weld wire and has no problem with the weight. I just snipped the middle bit of wire off making a 2" x 1" slot and it fits perfectly. :D
