chickencam
We are going through choosing A levels and GCSE's at the moment, ED doesn't have a clue what she wants to do and she is finding it tough narrowing down her options. DS already thinks he knows what he wants to do for A levels but is struggling more with the choice of his GCSE's. He wants to teach Geography ot Geology at his school, we will see what he thinks in a few years time, I could see him doing it actually Best wishes to all of those making these difficult choices. Lewis
I think the coursework heavy subjects are really good I only really did Geography with coursework and it means you can keep going over it, get help from a teacher and then tewak it ... ended up with an A* My A-levels have no coursework and its really annoying, 2 years work can ride on 2 exams Our french teacher was so good, he was the deputy head everyone in lower school was always scared of, but completely different in lessons - really funny in some of the things he said Geography is better than History IMO - less coursework, but still work the same amount . As I am not on my feet that well, poor dad is roped in to take me.. he says since being retired he's never been so busy.. love him.

chick wiggle
Im feeling for you Cookie, I find it all so confusing, what with all the different 'pathways' etc. We had the options evening last week with my DD, although it wasnt too bad as she had a good idea of what she wanted to do. It mainly went completly over my head though, what with GCSEs, Btecs and diplomas But she wants to be a barrister and so her options were mainly focosed on what would help her when she starts to do law. Although she is doing textiles, which i am pleased about as she really enjoys this and although to say its a 'bit of light relief' would be the wrong wording, it will be a nice change from her other subjects. Parents evening tomorro night, oh what an exiting and glamorous life I have
Cooks
well I have my sons one to one meeting with the senior teacher monday sooooo all should be crystal clear then.... I hope.. He's pretty sure of the subjects to choose now, the only thing that will scupper his plans are if he doesn't get his 1st and 2nd choice (as he has to pick 4) he really doesn't want to do the 3rd or 4th but doesn't to do the other subjects more... someone get ready to give me headache tablets on MOnday afternoon.... missuscluck
We are just back from our mentoring meeting with my sons form tutor. When It came to asking advice on which subjects he thought he should take we got no feedback whatsoever about his suitability for each subject. I feel a bit like every question we asked he didnt know the answer to. We were hoping for a bit more guidance tbh. He has picked his subjects though. GCSE Biology, chemestry, physics, geography, german and product design. Its a big ask and I hope its not too much.
Cooks
oh I was hoping for reassurance and guidance at this meeting, I hope it's not a waste of time. Just have to wait until Monday to find out now. My son is very matter of fact about it at the moment and taking things in his stride, we are happy for him to choose the subjects he enjoys as the core subjects have to be done regardless so that only gives him a few choices left and I want him to enjoy himself at school and not feel under too much pressure. However that doesn't mean he can not do his work..
missuscluck
Good luck Cookie. Its hard being a parent isnt it. I just have to keep telling myself they are HIS options and not mine and whatever he is happy with. To be fair the person we saw has only known my son for a few months. I had kind of hoped for more though. He was literaly working off his report, same as us. No actual feedback on his suitability for particular subjects. Cooks
Thanks yes it isn't easy is it, I dread it when it's A Levels or the like Well on top of this meeting on Monday in the evening it's his parents evening where primarily its to find out how they ahve been doing but they said we have the opportunity then also to ask questions about suitability of choices etc, so between the two meetings we should get enough information, well thats the theory.. Cinnamon
Thanks yes it isn't easy is it, I dread it when it's A Levels or the like Spare a thought for me then - this time last year it was options AND A level options. This time next it will be A level options & uni It does take some thinking about, doesn't it? Our school did their blocks in an interesting way. The pupils have 'core' subjects that they have to do (English,Maths etc), then they can choose 2,3 or 4 extras. Once they have all the choices in,THEN they put them into blocks, minimising disappointment. Only 1 pupil last year didn't get to do everything they wanted Good luck all
Karen & co.
Thanks yes it isn't easy is it, I dread it when it's A Levels or the like Spare a thought for me then - this time last year it was options AND A level options. This time next it will be A level options & uni It does take some thinking about, doesn't it? Good luck all We have GCSE options, A level choices and uni choices this year again in 2 years and again in 4 years guess we shouldn't have had 4 children at 2 year intervals, it was confusing for ES doing his options, then his A's and ED's options, it didn't get any clearer this time Hope everyone gets what they want Karen x
Cooks
OMG! I have just realised that my year 7 son will be doing his options at the same time as my year 9 son is old enough to do his A level choices. I got that right didn't I!! 2 school years apart... Chucky Mama
We've been to our Options Evening and DD is taking French, Triple Science, Drama, Short Course PE, Compulsory Citizenship, IT and finally after much thought has chosen Geography over History. Geography and Drama were really the only ones that were a choice for her as the others were all pretty much compulsory for her pathway. The short course PE is an extra. Janty
We have just had our son's options evening. His school are also going to try to accomodate everyone's wishes...they claim to have a full sucess rate at this! Son has to do the various sciences, english lit, lang and maths. He has chosen to do photography (hence the post about wanting an old film slr in the 'Wanted' section), geography, applied business studies (counts as 2) and art. Cooks
well the option evening went well, although his Maths teacher didn't turn up for the apointments. all his epxected grades are c and above so we are all pleased with that. He's no thinking of doing 'resistant materials' instead of his previous thought of construction or graphics.. my heads spinning, but the technology teachers seem to think that his skills would be best in this area.. whether to take that as good or bad I do not know. So Core subjects English Lit and English Lanuguage Double Science Maths Geography then options Btec PE Resistant Materials and ICT they seem to think he will be lucky and get all his first choices. Taking btec pe as it will give him a break from exams, I could have done with a btec when I was at school!
