ali-s
On 8th February 2010. Colorado cotton yarn suitable for dishcloths. 6x 50g balls £3.99. This is the best cotton yarn I have found for dishcloths. Nice bright colours. I can get two dishcloths from one ball of yarn. Washes really well, doesn't lose it shape and stays soft even after umpteen washes at 50c http://www.lidl.co.uk I tried to do a link to the product but failed

Chickvic
I'll be fetching some of this - does anyone have a specific (and easy!) dish cloth pattern? Or is it just so many stitches and knit a square?
Plum
Yes more or less or you can do something fancy. Is this enough choice http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/dishcloths.php

Is this enough choice http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/dishcloths.php Errrrmmmmm I just go for the "cast on til it's wide enough and knit til it's long enough" school of thought...I would n't want to use such fancy cloths Sha x
Chickvic
Looking at some of those I'm inclined to go for the knit a square approach

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Now, I'm an ignoramus on this, so apologies if this seems like a shocking question: Why make dishcloths when they go all yuk and need throwing out after six months/a year (which is how long it would take me to knit one. )? Why not buy them? Are they better when made?

Anna! didnt you see the dishcloth that I made omletina????? they are for hanging above the rayburn and looking pretty dont you know anything???? apparently making dishcloths is a huge thing in america, I just like them (and the rather impressive stash that I have in the back room) it gives me random little things to knit cathy x
Chook n Boo Mum
A home knitted dishcloth lasts sooooooo much longer than 6 months if it's washed regularly & not left to fester ...and is much more robust than a shop bought thing......I have both types in my kitchen drawer & the homemade ones are far superior Sha x
Snowy
If I do a hot towel wash, I chuck in the dishcloths. The knitted ones come out as sturdy as ever, but the bought ones disintegrate after a couple of washes. Although not used for dishwashing, I use them loads for wiping up spilled drinks, muddy paw marks, crumbs, mucky faces. I have a big pile and it's often use once, chuck it in the wash. Not sure, but I think they might be slightly more green than using loads of kitchen roll
ali-s
I've got knitted dishcloths which are over 2 years old and still in good condition. First of all I use them for washing dishes and wiping down the kitchen surfaces. When they are past their best they get used for more general cleaning like washing down walls or floor cloths. When they are no longer good enough for wall or floor washing I use them for scrubbing out the pooey Eglu nestbox and general Eglu cleaning. After all this I throw them in the compost bin either whole or cut up into bits. Some of my two year old cloths are still too good for Eglu cleaning I have a small knitting bag containing a pair of needles and a couple of balls of cotton yarn which I keep in the car. I knit dishcloths while I am waiting around in car parks as taxi driver to my 2 teenagers.

A chickychickychick-ENN!!
So is it plain or plain/perl to knit a dishcloth?
ubereglu
So is it plain or plain/perl to knit a dishcloth? It depends if you want it to be in stocking stitch or garter. I think I'd suggest garter stitch rows, (plain stitch throughout), as then it won't all curl up.
