jellykelly
I have just discovered that there will be a poultry auction in Maidstone on the 27th feb. Now, if hubby is back from Cumbria, he said he will take me for a look and see 'what it's all about'. Should I take boxes just in case?? Will the temptation be too much?? If you are all bad and say I should take boxes (just in case), then perhaps I should start clearing another patch of garden too (just in case)

tom123
Defiantly more than one box I took 4 pet carriers and 2 dog crates yesterday and filled them all
jellykelly
Detling showground!! He has already said no more but I'm sure i could win him round. I can do the girly puppy dog eyes and promise all sorts of naughty things if he lets me get my own way!
ubereglu
Take a box, but be really vigilant when looking at prospective purchases, and try and pick out really healthy birds.
tom123
Why don't you accidentally bid?? Nod or lift your hand up and then it's yours
jellykelly
I like that idea! "I didn't mean to, my nose was itching"
Tutti Frutti
Aaah it's in Detling Aerodrome Estate ME14 3HU (plugged into my SatNav. Just in case!) And read Redwing's brilliant reply on another auction thread - it actually put me off going to an auction (but I would buy at a show and this clashes with the Reading Bantam Show! Phew!) Found it here
emchook
for the ignorant ... whats the difference between buying at a show and buying at an auction ?
tom123
At a show there is a fixed price. At an auction you bid for each bird. Yesterday at Salisbury some birds went for £5 yet some went for £
Redwing
My honest advice? Dont take any boxes Go for a look see, do not buy until you have a bit more experience unless you have someone you can take that can help Too many people buy things that are very attractive or that they feel sorry for and many dealers play on this sadly, its not because the buyers arent clever its just that sellers can be crafty Of course there are lots of sellers that are good and in time its easier to spot what is a good buy and what isnt My suggestion is dont buy on impulse, go to a poultry show and see what you like the look of, speak to the breeders and ask what the breed is like to keep or contact the breed club and find out about the pros and cons of your chosen breed then make an informed decision I have bought on impulse a few times and very luckily have got away with it but looking back I was very foolhardy (and still am just a bit more savvy these days ) Emchook - buying at a show is a set price for the cage of birds (1,2,3,4 birds in a cage) its generally safer as the birds are normally owned by exhibitors so you can be sure of a higher standard of care and quality, there is plenty of time to look and less chances of making a rash decision
jellykelly
Thanks for the advice. I missed a show yesterday. It would have been good to go but there will be others. Dh probably only suggested the auction to keep me sweet - he'll probably break some bad news or wants to make a 'silly' purchase of something completely unneccassary himself! I'm keen to go and have a look - but that may well be it. I won't be clearing anymore space in the garden (yet)
