Cadbury Creme Eggs

Recommended Posts

I noticed M&S in Nottingham have started selling Cadbury's Creme Eggs. Presumably the bods at M&S have checked the Free Range credentials - in line with their ethical policies?

You'd think Cadbury's could fool the likes of us, but be more careful when dealing with M&S.

if you have time, would you mail M&S to ask them? :D

Some of this year’s production will use it, as will all future production from 2011

I suppose this is better than nothing BUT they did say the same thing last year, promising FR for 2010.

And what about Charlie from customer services emailing me that the change HAD happened.

I think they are telling different people different things to fob them off.

Your Roving Reporter here! As promised, I went to M&S at lunchtime. I checked Cadbury's Creme egg box - said contains "dried egg white". I asked at the Information Desk in the Food Hall is this Free Range egg white? Assistant said she didn't know. Did not offer to find out. I said under M&S's ethical policy this surely should be Free Range. Then a man assistant joined conversation and said "only M&S branded items are Free Range. If the products are not ours, we cannot say what the egg is - whether Free Range or Battery."

I pressed the point that M&S customers read the message emblazoned on their walls "There's nothing woolly about our commitment to animal welfare" and perhaps believe ALL products for sale in M&S are Free Range. This is misleading. All I got was a "I'll mention it to someone". Her colleague then oddly had a telephone call for her ....

Across the road in Hotel Chocolat ....I asked do your products contain eggs and if so are they Free Range? Assistant without hesitation, deviation or repetition, stated all our products with egg in are Free Range. He then took me to every egg product and talked me through it. His Manageress then joined us and went into even greater detail Top marks to Hotel Chocolat!

Trotted into Thorntons: Young assistant did look a bit frightened when I asked the Free Range question. He said I will have to ask my Manager. The Manager said I have no idea, but I will ring HQ for you now. He returned and said that anything with the detail "Made in UK" has Free Range egg. Any product without this detail (not many products NOT made in UK) may use egg which is more than likely not Free Range. I suggested it may be worth highlighting Free Range credentials to public. Manager & assistant very helpful. Top marks to Thorntons too!

I think Hotel Choc. has lots of high street shops, but I don't really enjoy shopping - wandering round Nottingham at lunchtime five days a week is enough for me. We only ever buy Hotel Chocolat goodies if they're on half price. And then you don't use their bag - risk life & limb going back to the office advertising the fact you have chocolate!

I emailed Cadbury to ask wether the egg currently used in creme eggs was free range and also if the Kraft takeover would have any effect ...

Thanks for your recent enquiry regarding the very small amount of egg we use in our Crème Eggs.

We are pleased to advise that we are committed to changing the egg ingredient to one from a free range source. This change is in line with our broader sustainability agenda, and reflects our developing consideration of animal welfare.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Regards

Consumer Relations

Standard response then ... and not answering the questions

Have replied asking when they plan to make the change, and what happened to last years news when they would use FR in 2010 season eggs :)

Thank your recent enquiry regarding our products.

We have been in touch with our factory who advise that....

We are pleased that our switch to using only free range egg in Cadbury Creme Egg is about to take place in our Bournville plant. It has taken slightly longer than we would have wished but it was important the quality of the new ingredient did not disappoint the millions of Creme Egg fans out there.

We thank you for your concern and for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Hope its true this time :D

Just got this from M&S when I emailed them about the fact that they now stock a product containing non-free ramge egg in their stores

Dear Ms ****,

Thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry to hear that you are disappointed with us now selling cadbury's cream eggs.

We are currently trialing selling branded goods in our stores but we are very appreciative when receiving customer feedback as this lets us know where we can improve or where customers are unhappy.

I can assure you that I have logged your comments for the buying teams attention. They can then review all feedback for the future.

Thanks again for getting in touch.

Looks suspiciously like a standard email to me!
