CatsCube
Hello all. I MISS MY CHICKENS!!! I want to return to the fold. I had my backgarden relandscaped last summer, and their is a corner that is dying to have chickens in (I have not yet mentioned this to the OH) I miss having chickens terribly, working full time makes it a waste to have so many again, but I was thinking I could make a run again and have 3 in an eglu this time. Plus in September I will go down to working 4 days a week instead. So I see in theshop now there is a new type of eglu the 'go' or whatever it was called. So really people, whats the difference between that and the classic (other than slightly cheaper) would love to hear your views. So how is everyone? The Dogmother
Hi Cat, good to see you again. I have seen the Go in action, and would choose the Eglu Classic every time. Hope that you get more chooks.
CatsCube
Really, they look rather practical as the whole side opens instead of just a little port hole. Must admit the classic is a more attractive shape. Is one any bigger than the other?
The Dogmother
The cubed metre-age is probably roughly the same, the Classic may be a bit bigger. The Go is made out of a totally different plastic though - it sounds tinny and has panels which clip on a central frame. Personally, I saw this as a home for red mites I know that Lewis has one, I'll prod him to come along.
Lewis
I think the floor space is a bit bigger in the Go, because the base widens out, rather than curving in at the bottom and sloping back, and its one big tray so not a separate out nest box. Not sure which I prefer the looks anymore - when I first saw the Go I preferred the look of the classic. Clare is right, you build up the shell of the Go, then screw the panels on afterwards, so you can change the colour - I think the gap is too big for red mite but haven't had any yet (touch wood ). The plastic is really different too, the classic is quite rubbery and smooth, this is hard and a bit more 'clinical'? and has a kind of rough pattern on it. I like the big door at the back and how both trays slide out easily to hose down, but kind of miss the nest box door too - makes it a bit of a pain to butt up into a corner of a WIR. Not sure what I'd go for if we got another, this is ideal for the ducks ... probably a cube! Have noticed Omlet have put the prices up to the old classic price, and increased the classics though. Mine was £175 without a run
CatsCube
Yes I saw they were £175 without the run, which is a bargin. I would build a WIR again, and have this up on a platform to give more ground space. My main gripe I had with the cube I had was the texture of the plastic. As the orange part which made up the roof and door was very pourus and made up of loads of tiny holes, so of course in a WIR chickens sat on top and pooped on it, and it never fully washed off and so looked a dirty white/grey colour all the time where the poo got ingrained in the little holes. How have you found washing it, does it come up nice and clean? Also I suppose the advantage is that if it fades becomes scruffy etc I can just buy a nice new clip on cover. Good news is (well sort of) spoke to the OH about it and he said I could do what I want, so long as he doesnt have to get involved. So chicken keeping is on! (I will of course rope him into building the run hahahaha) Will have to wait a little, as my funds are all going on my reef tank at the moment and it will be easier to wait till the weather warms up a touch, but watch this space!!! Its different plastic to the cube, they are intentionally patterned not holes, its kind of got a raised pattern on it - just wash it and it'll clean up Don't know if you can tell from that close up? The Dogmother
Cat, I just jetwash the cube and eglus - they come up like new and all the little pores are cleaned.
CatsCube
Its funny cause I used a pressure setting on mine before but its really ingrained. I thought I perhaps just had a bit of a faulty one but my boss at work also has a cube and she said the same thing. Its just were patches of the coloured plastic were full of little holes. Now the suns out Im looking forward to this even more. cant wait to get started!!!
