? Homemade pecka blocks

Recommended Posts

Hi,

After just paying £9.13 each for some pecka blocks(price include vat and postage), of which two were broken so had to be sent back to supplier who was not very happy.

I was wondering........... has anyone made any themselves? If so would it be possible to tell me what one would put into them, especially what to hold them together and how long you would cook them for etc.

I would be very grateful for your help, as the girls were very grumpy when i told them that the blocks had to go back (well at that price) and the supplier would not send new ones until broken ones returned.

I also thought that it would be a great birthday present for my two remaining ex-battery girls who will be celebrating two years of freedom on march 11th.

Thanks again for your help :D

Ta daa!

You will need a stick of some sort, garden cane works well, cut a piece of cane and drill a hole near one end for hanging it up.

Next collect the ingredients you want to add, mixed corn, pellets etc. Crack a fresh egg into a bowl, mix the egg with a few dessert spoons of flour & a drop of water. So that it forms a runny paste.

Cut a long wide piece of kitchen tin foil. Then in the bowl that you have the mixed egg & flour, add the mixed corn etc, mix it all up so the mixed corn & pellets start to stick together. Give it a good mix so that everything is coated.

Spoon the mix onto the tin foil to make a long sausage shape, you can add the stick through the middle at this stage. Then wrap the foil around the ingredients and press firmly so it sticks together to form a sausage like shape. Then put it in the oven at 120 degrees for an hour to let it dry out slowly. Check it's hard, if not leave a bit longer then let it cool and let the birds test it out

I have made this several time, and my hens love it. :D

I always make my own pecka block - in fact my children love doing it!

I use 6 tbsp of flour, handful of peanuts, currants, porridge oats, a cup of corn and a chopped apple and anything cooked veg left overs, I mixed it up with water to a sticky dough and pressed it all into a silicon loaf tray. It slow cooks on a low heat until hard (just cover with foil if currants start to catch) cools and then is quickly devoured by my girls! I tend to tie it onto the side of the cube run. Simples :D

I made one of these today following Redwing's recipe and it was cooling on the side. YS came home from school and from the doorway said "ooh that looks nice, what is it" I think I should get his eyes tested again.

He now thinks its totally disgusting and can't believe I've cooked it in the oven. :D
