ChrisEllis
Was outside tonight, putting the chickens and ducks away and i suddnely saw one of my chickens in the air roghly 12ft...at first i thought it was a wild bird but it was katheirne my poland, ive seen her do it before...but its only when im around...but i wasn;t scaring her i was in with the ducks well over 10 metres away and she suddenly lept into the air and flew out of the pen...and just sat there...it was dark out aswell. all the silkies were inside and polands were still out (scruffy stays out whether its pitch black or not if im around - follows me everywhere!) Was wondering what feathers are their flight feathers, and from now until i put them in a sheltered run wuld cutting her flight feathers mean she cant be shown in shows? Redwing
Yes clipping her wing would mark her down some way in shows maybe even discounting her completely, I wouldnt wing clip any of my show birds When you spread the wing out there are two layers of big feathers, you cut the longer set back to where the second layer start, cut the first six or seven feathers link - http://www.omlet.co.uk/guide/guide.php?view=Chickens&cat=Chicken%20Care&sub=wing%20clipping
docsquid
One of mine, Gwennie, is a good flyer despite having her wings clipped (mine aren't posh chickens, just little hybrids). She can very easily fly over the Omlet netting. Today I spotted a look on her face then off she went - over the netting and off to explore the garlic bed. Fortunately, she is more interested most of the time in staying with the rest of her flock than escaping. She has also never tried to fly over the fence into next door's garden, although this is only 5ft high and well within her grasp. Wing clipping doesn't seem to have made the slightest difference to her ability to fly. The other two aren't so good - Megan does powered leaps and Blodwyn flies like a brick, poor little thing! So my experience of wing-clipping, while limited, has not been very positive. I shan't bother to do it again when she moults.
