crankycookie
When I got Penny as a 3 month old pullet, the lady who sold her to me said she was a Red Star from a hatchery, but was a bit puzzled as to why she had black feathers. She was in a pen with other red stars from the same "batch" but she looked quite different from them, as they were red with white feathers and she's tipped with black. The lady said that perhaps she's just got stronger RIR genes, but I'm curious if she's just something else that got mixed in accidentally. I thought that hatcheries' "recipes" for their production reds would be fairly consistent. What do you think she is? She looks a bit like a RIR to me but not exactly. She lays cream-colored eggs that are just the faintest bit pink. Penny's egg is on the right, and it looks a bit darker in the photo than in reality. Egluntyne
Could she be something like a Columbian Black Tail?

batcatz
Here's a pic of my columbian blacktail, but she has a much shorter tail. She was POL in this photo. Her tail has stayed short. EDIT: Forgot to say her eggs are the same colour as Penny. Light brown.
pipistrelle
Just out of interest, the photos I put up of my girls which we think are Warrens don't show that both the red girls have black feathers in their tails. Is this unusual in Warrens or could there be some columbian blacktail in them. Can just see them in the photo. Sara-W
Hi I think Penny looks exactly like my Rhode Island Reds they both have black markings in their tails they also have some black markings in their wings. I have read that these black markings are acceptable in RIR's. Also both my RIR's lay light brown eggs sometimes with a pink blush

pipistrelle
so confusing though the drive to free range explains the rush to get out every time I open the run door and the tunnels along the perimeter fence!
pipistrelle
If it's ok to link to another forum(?), just found this which explains it too. http://forums.thepoultrykeeper.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=17803 The last 2 piccies could be my girls! and the ones above look like Penny P x
Plum
Well my gingernut rangers came in both colours. I believe they are a first cross between light sussex and RIR.
The Dogmother
Could she be something like a Columbian Black Tail? Looks like just that to me too. RIRs have a much deeper chocolate brown colourign and are almost shiny too. Columbian balck-tails are a lot redder with black/greenish feathers on their tails and wings. Both are really tame girls and I use the latter a lot for demonstrations as they are so easy to handle.
