Carolinep
Just caught up with this topic. Sounds soooooo exciting, would love to do it but wouldn't know what to do with any little boys!! I'm really looking forward to reading about your chicks Lesley & Fee when they arrive

feemcg
I have 2 'farmer' friends ready to take the boys - one is building up his flock again and more or less leaves them to it - roosting up trees etc., the other will only keep them till 18 weeks then eat, which makes me a wee bit sad but its something you have to accept if you venture into the hatching thing. Cinnamon
It is exciting isn't it? I would love to do it too,but like you,I would be worried about the boys And knowing my luck,I would get a lot of boys!
Lesley
I was reading in a book yesterday that you get more cockerels if you breed from hens which are under 18 months old. It is an old book that my auntie used to use - I've never seen that stated anywhere else.
feemcg
Thats interesting Lesley - the chap that sent me some of my Cream Legbars said the 3 large eggs were from his hens and the 3 small (and they are tiny!) came from his pullets - i have 1 large and 2 small left of his so 'watch this space'! Lesley
We had a lot of cockerels last year - and our hens were young. Some of the eggs we hatched weren't our own so we haven't done any proper research yet. It will be interesting to find out if there is any diference.
