Geoid
No, you cant. But you can buy external dial up modems that connect by USB.
Charlottechicken
Thanks Fred! I am assuming that I can surf the net with a netbook straight away when I am finally wi-fi or do I have to buy anything else to get going, I don't want to use it out of the house (yet)? How's the Samsung by the way?
Geoid
WiFi is already built in, so when you get your WiFi in your house set up, all you have to do is connect and away you go. I cant comment on the Samsung yet as it hasn't arrived yet , coming on Tuesday now.
deejmum
I have the little Samsung that Fred is getting and I do love it. It is so easy to carry around and does most things that my bigger laptop does, including I tunes, My only minor issue with it is that I play a lot of Facebook scrabble and it is a real struggle to have the board and the rack on screen st the same time as it is slightly too narrow, however I have bo other complaints and I do love my tech! On the other hand I am on my much bigger acer aspire 6920 now which is pretty and big (for a laptop) and I have had loads of probs with it, although graphics and sound wise it is great x
Olly
Well I am now surfing the forum and posting this from my HP mini, sitting on the sofa with the cat curled up next to me! I love it, and Charlotte, I turned it on and it immediately picked up my WiFi connection and logged on with no problems! The only downside is that the screen is quite small, naturally, and the keyboard is a bit smaller than normal - I'm making quite a few typos. The other thing is that I don't find the touch-sensitive mousepad very easy to use, I keep accidentally enlarging the size of the images and things like that. I expect I'll get used to that. All I want to be able to do is check email and the internet without having to sit upstairs in the study, and this is perfect for that. Haven't tested it in the garden yet, but if it's nice tomorrow I'll be watching the chickens and reading the forum at the same time!
Charlottechicken
Well I am now surfing the forum and posting this from my HP mini, sitting on the sofa with the cat curled up next to me! Sounds perfect! I've just ordered mine, will pick it up from Tesco next week. Paid £170 (£5 discount code and £24 worth of clubcard vouchers) but should get another £10 and some pennies in cashback too. Got a further £3.98 worth of points too Broadband isn't sorted yet though
The Dogmother
Fabulous, and great price too Claire. I'm sure that you already know this, but make sure that your WiFi router is locked down and passworded.
Geoid
I'm sure that you already know this, but make sure that your WiFi router is locked down and passworded. Make sure you use WPA protection for the password (not WEP - use WPA-2 if your router has it)
Charlottechicken
Now you have both just blinded me with science Broadband not sorted yet, but I am assured it comes with all the security measures so that someone sitting on your front wall/house next door can't see what you are doing online. Is that what you mean? (laymans terms please )
The Dogmother
It means that it comes with the option to be locked (secured) but you'll need to activate it first. Just as your computer can be locked when you leave it, but many people don't bother. I can count 5 unlocked WiFi networks within reach from my house! Geoid
Its like adding a password, so only you can use it and no one else can see what your doing. There are 2 types of protection, use WPA as with WEP people can see what you are doing and use your internet.

Geoid
Its brilliant! Lightweight, very small, outstanding battery life (only charged it once) , decent LED screen, speakers not tinny (like mobile phone ones) loads fast, comes with useful programs like battery manager and FailSafe. Also came with a case

Charlottechicken
I love my little netbook too Fred! It tells me how much charge is left, although it would've been useful to know how long to charge it for in the first place Mine even has excel on it, and I just love the size. Now I wish I had my modem so I could go surfing. Every time I switch it on it is determined to search through all the available networks, there are 11 nearby and two are not secure, it even tells me who the ISP is. I'm wondering how far away they are and if I should tell them anyone can access their computer
Geoid
There should be a light or something, orange when charging green(or blue) when it is fully charged.

Also came with a case Would love to know your ongoing thoughts on this Netbook,Fred. Hubby is after one & this has been recommended to us in a few shops...................I get an extra years warranty & a nice partner discount if I get it from John Lewis Its actually the N150,but I would still love to hear how you are getting on with yours
Geoid
I use it almost every day for school, its lighter than pen and notepad, still loads up fast. Battery life is still excellent I only have to charge it every couple of days. It has survived the knocks etc of me carrying it around school and it survived getting hit by a car.
