x*Lauren*x
One of our chickens has been sat on the nesting part of the eglu all day. she refuses to come out, she laid an egg, and then continued to sit on it. we took the egg off her, but she still wants to sit on the nesting part. is she being broody due to the time of year? or is it something to be more concerned about? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks lauren
Egluntyne
I'd remove any other eggs from the nest and turf her off it, just in case she is on the brink of going broody.
The 3 D's
I would say she is broody. I would try and get her out of it if i was you (not that is anything to worry about) because they can be a right pain when they're broody. One of mine is broody at the mo and she refuses to get off the nest, just like yours, and if you get her out she will go straight back in, unless you shut the door and then she goes stir crazy!! Its not necessarily down to the time of year, more down to the breed or nature of the chicken. What breed is it thats gone broody because there are some breeds that go broody regularly Matt
atsw
I'd say she's broody. Two of my pekins are at the moment and they do exactly as you describe, going back to the nest box at each and every opertunity. They also tend to squark at you and stick their tail feathers up if you try to lift them off the nest. Pekins and Orpingtons are well known to go broody, and I've got both types in my flock - great if you want to hatch chicks, but bad news if you like eggs (broody hen = no eggs). x*Lauren*x
now she is just standing outside her eglu!! she doesnt seem to want to eat or to drink either! absolute nightmare. does anyone know how long this will take for her to snap out of it? she looks very grumpy too (if hens can look grumpy) x
atsw
If you catch them just as they are turning, they can return to 'normal' within 24/48hrs. One of my two was showing signs on Friday, I isolated her in a run with nowhere to sit yesterday and she's back to normal today roaming around with everyone else. I was too slow with the other one who started 'sitting' a week last Thursday and I was not around to do anything about it. She's still diving into the nest box at every opportunity even after two days in the 'sin bin' this weekend . Oh, and yes, Broody Hens do look very Grumpy!
