deanna_xxx
I have 4 ex battery hens which I have had for almost a year now (so I believe they must be 2ish as they leave the battery when about 1 year old). Until recently I have been getting a regular supply of normal looking eggs. In the past fortnight I have had 5 'wind eggs' - they are tiny with no yolk. I have read that this is common in young 'point of lay' birds but mine have been laying fine for ages now and are far from being point of lay. I have also read that a sudden shock may do this to them but as far as I am aware this has not happened. Any ideas? Also I assume it's just the one bird. Ain't Nobody Here
I often get wind eggs from Maisie who's nearly 3 . I've had 4 in the past 10 days, in fact. I don't worry about them - I just see them as "blips".
deanna_xxx
That's great - as long as it's normal! I was worried that I might have to track down the culprit and take her to the vet! By the way - can you eat them? I often bake and need egg whites only.
Ain't Nobody Here
Maisie's have always been too small to be of any use . I have a dinky slightly larger one just now which I haven't opened yet (I always open them out of nosiness!). I'm curious to see if it has a yolk - they don't normally. I don't see why you shouldn't use them if they're large enough .
Eggasperated
My Carol lays 4 or 5 wind eggs a month, I usually use them by adding them to omlettes or any recipe where several eggs are needed and a bit of extra white won't matter.
