spencerwood
Hello..., If anyone can offer some adivce, it would be much appreicated! All being well, we move house in just over 2 weeks and I'm worrying about my new neighbours and what they'll think of my ladies! The thing is, they are ever so noisy at the moment, from early morning and then hours before laying. My current neighbours are OK with it (they say so anyway) but they've got used to them over the last 12 months or so but what will the new neighbourhood think? As for the early morning call... I have tried covering their run a few times in the hope that they'd think it's still dark outside but it didn't work for long - I think they got wise to it! In an experiment, I left the door open last night, in the hope that they could rise when they wanted to without having to ask to be 'let out'. It worked to a point but because they're both laying today they've been sqwarking all over the place. I've just been home to check on them and they seem to be intermitantly airing their views. Will this decrease with age (they're about 14months and have only laid 9 eggs between them so far) or can I do something to calm them. I love my ladies but at times my husband and I cringe its so loud - helpppppppppppp! Hoping all's well with everyone and their flocks... Busybird
My chooks have gone through stages of being noisy but are at their worst when they are confined for a long time and hear people close by. It is as if they are calling out to be released from the run. I suspected that they were used to a routine (e.g. I would generally let them out at a certain time and wouldn't go out to them until then) so tried to get them used to a more random day - going out to collect eggs but not letting them out of the run on some days, letting them out on others, not going out at all until later in the day etc. They still sometimes bok bok when we have a delivery van in the drive or if I take the car out of the garage (they hear the door opening) but are much improved. Some of my newbies are very noisy egg layers but for most of the time they do seem to be quieter and I no longer need to avoid being seen through the window for fear of them starting to shout! Do you have a fixed routine that they complain about if it isn't followed?
