in or out!!

Recommended Posts

Can anyone out there help me. Since the warmer weather my chickens roost on their outside perch as it reaches dusk. They do not make any attempt to go inside their house. Every night I decide its too cold outside and place them one by one back in the house. My question is am I doing the right thing or should I just leave them where they are? They are rhode island reds, light sussex, hybrid and black rock. What do you all think?

Mine started sleeping outdoors too a few weeks ago. I spent a week putting them back in the eglu one by one but I've given up now  . I worried that the eglu was harbouring some nasties but it's been pressure washed and diatomed so I reckon they just like perching in a "tree" .

Mine have done the exact same - and I am paranoid I've got some hidden infestation. But you could operate in the coop it's that clean.

My DH says that the girls were brought up in an environment with loads of perches and they do love climbing so he reckons that the perches in the integral run are nicer 'beds' than the perches in the coop.

It just makes it harder to clean all the poo up as the perches they sleep on are at the far end of the run. :wall::wall::wall:

And there was me moaning with my other girls kipped in the nest.

I don't know if it's any help but lots of the chickens that live in our area roost in trees and bushes even though they have hen-houses. It's very funny watching them climb the branches and then lauch themselves into the taller trees. They queue up to settle for the night and argue and vie for the best, most comfy posistions. They are quite noisy telling each other off until they are all in place and then it's quiet and peaceful :shh::lol: , even the tiny baby chicks get up on to the lower branches but it takes them ages and if they don't all manage it a Mummy stays in the hen-house with them, bless :)
