Baby has Peritonitis - now she won;t eat anything

Recommended Posts

Took her to a brilliant chicken vet today in Shifnal near Telford (not as far from Walsall as i thought it would be) it was really worth taking her to someone who new straight away what was wrong. my normal vet is great for cats and dogs but will def be taking all my chickies there from now on. but i hope i dont need to.

He confirmed she had peritonitis she was full of fluid underneath he drained a little and confirmed she had infection.

She is on 3 different meds to try and help her over it but he said its not looking good but sometime they do recover but if not she may only have 2-3 weeks

He then said if her combe starts to turn blue at anytime its affecting her heart and the kindest thing to do would be to send her to chicken heaven. :(

Im really gutted. but trying to stay positive for her. she's now back with her sisters in the garden in the sunshine. she will now be spoit rotten, just sent OH out for lots of yummy treats for her as its the only thing she will eat.

Fingers crossed i really hope she fights.

I lost my Annie with this on Tuesday. I blame myself as I didn't realise how ill she was. The only signs were not being able to walk properly, so I thought she had hurt her leg and left her for a few days to see how she recovered then Sunday she couldn't stand at all. She was still eating and tail and head up and perky.

I have a good chicken vet and he gave her some antibiotics for me to inject. She had the first one Monday. Tuesday before I went to work I left her lying in the sun. She had eaten porridge oats, honey and natural yoghurt and really enjoyed it. When I got home she was dead.

I really hope your Baby pulls through and you probably acted quicker than me.

Good luck

Hi everyone

Thanks for your thoughts and messages. its really heart breaking to watch them slowly fade away. she has been on meds since sat but her eating has got slightly worse she will only eat now with the the others so they are all back on warm mash /corn/oats in the mornings to try and encourage her to eat getting some mealworms today as she loves the live ones but won't eat the dried

She won't take her meds off bread either now as she knows i've put something on it! I'm having use a syringe keep thinking i might hurt her when i have to hold her head.

i'm not sure what i will do if she doens't respond to meds. i would like her to pass naturally but that sometimes doesn't happen i know. i dont want to her to suffer but would like to give her a chance.

The vet is called Taylor & Marshall 45 High Street, Shifnal TF11 8BL‎ - 01952 460 781‎

So sorry, really hope she picks up today. Have you wrapped her in a towel first that seems to calm them down.

Yes i do that, pop a blanket around her sort of works sometimes, but i hate having to stress her out even more feel like a horrible chicken mommy especially when she chucks me a evil look :(
