dixie chick
Does anyone have any advice about which breeds will live most happily together? I am about to get my first flock and am planning to get 6 birds which I have narrowed down to the following: a Barnevelder, a Brahma, an Orpington, a Plymouth Rock, a Sussex and a Wyandotte. I know that there are colour variations within these breeds but am guessing that the colour does not affect their nature .....(?) I thought if I got them from the same place on the same day and all about the same age then I would have the best chance of them getting along .....and Wernlas in Shropshire does have all these breeds. Any comments or advice would be welcome!
Daphne
That sounds like an ideal flock to me, good old-fashioned soft-feather pure breeds! Getting them at the same time is a good way of trying to ensure harmony from the start so thats a good plan. A birds colour doesn't make any difference to its nature. jennydavies
I agree totally with Daphne, an ideal flock and although someone will emerge as flock leader, getting them all together will cut down the chance of anyone getting bullied. We got two and two on different days and they took about three or four days to sort themselves out. Now all is peaceful, happy and chicken heaven
Christian
Looks like a nice little flock to me I have a couple of Sussexes and a Barnevelder and they are lovely hens. As has been mentioned, getting them all at the same time will reduce squabbles, but some are inevitable. Should be kept to a minimum if all introduced together. Good luck. sjp
I added a Speckled Sussex and a Buff Laced Wyandotte both about 30 weeks old at the time from Wernlas to my little flock just before easter the sussex is really friendly and settled down in no time the dotte is just starting to settle and grow in confidence they are both still in they're own house and run and just FR with the others through as a couple of my other girls are still being a bit snappy with them both the new girls had been feather pecked the sussex quite bad
chickyhazel
That should be fine - lots of variety! When we got our 4 new girls although they hadn't all lived together they got on quite well - although the amber star was picked on by the others for a while.
