Unsecure chicken perches

Hello,

 

I became the proud owner/mummy of 2 chooks about 3 weeks ago. They are my first so I am very new to all of this!

 

My girls have settled in really quickly, they have the entire garden to them selves (spoiled little things) and have been laying since day 2!!!

 

This is probably going to sound ridiculous but I didnt realise quite how much poo they would create between them! -I scoop and sweep daily but within 30 minutes I will have at least 4-5 more piles of 'plop' to clean up! I swear they know the path from the grass and prefer to go on the stone?!?! Is that possible?!

What is the right amount of poo to expect? Could they be overfeeding themselves with all the worms they find in the flowerbeds ontop of their layers and the odd handful of meal worms?!?!

 

Anyway..lovely to be here and to be a part of this lovely community!

Everyone always says how fantastic chickens are, but they never really mention the poo..!

 

Birds (generally) have very high metabolisms - if you're chook's not eating, it's snoozing. And what goes in, must come out...

Welcome to the forum, Widge . Yup, chickens poo a lot . Nowt you can really do except keep them off areas you don't want them to poo in - Omlet netting or similar is very good for that . I don't let my girls on the lawn or patio at all .

It all sounds perfectly normal to me. I freecycle my chickens poo and have a lady with an allotment collect bags of it every few weeks.

can't say i've ever really had an issue with the poo but then again we have a walk-in run and the girls only free range in the garden from time to time. The aubiose in the run just sucks up the poo and we don't notice it.

 

when they're in the garden, any little depositis just get brushed off the path onto the grass where the rain takes care of it or we'll zap it with the hose pipe.

Chooks are lean, mean pooing machines.

 

My poo picking go in a covered bucket and when I change the Hemcore I mix it all in with that and chuck is straight on the garden as I don't have a compost bin (2 have blown away - even wooden ones )

mine always poo right behind the gate that seperates them from the decking area, nice little spot for mommy to step in

 

we make chicken poo tea with ours, 1 water butt, few bags of poo that water can get through, 4 weeks later chicken poo tea for the garden and veggies!!

Thanks guys! I have been scooping it up and chucking it under the trees at the end of the garden but now I think I might get more creative! Poo tea sounds interesting!!!!

I give our chickens Garlic granules in their water and it does make their poo smell less bad, the only thing is when you are cuddling them and they chat to you, their breath smells of Garlic (acceptable in France)

My lot poo everywhere!! I'm forever cleaning it up. All over my newly painted decking too
