yogiwoods
Hi all I recently became the proud owner of three bantam girls aged 10 weeks (photo on another thread) 2 light sussex & 1 wyandotte. Just after a bit of advice on handling them. Probably just a bit of reassurance I think!! At the moment I have been waiting until dusk, then picking them up one at a time for a couple of minutes and having a little stroke of them. So far none have shreeked or done anything to suggest that they don't like it, but I'm now worried that they're not making any noise because their petrified!! Is it just me or does everyone worry about everything all the time??!! Am I doing the right thing handling them at this age? Should I wait until their older? So stressful.....but couldn't be without them now (after 4 days!!)
Olly
You are doing the right thing, because at dusk/night time they will be calmer and much easier to handle, and should get used to the feel of it so that then they don't mind being handled during the day. Roobaloo
It's best to get them to accept being handled now..whether they like it or not...because if ever you need to check them over or treat them in anyway, it'll be that little bit less stressful for them!! So long as it's done quietly, calmly...with a firm but not strong hold, so they're securely held and not struggling! Doing it at dusk is definitely the best way. I got mine used to me by sitting with them while they free-ranged in the evening...giving them a few treats just before bed, then as the night settled in, they decided I made an ideal roost!! So within the first 48hrs, I had both girls drifting off to sleep on my shoulder!! It gets easier and a little less stressful...I've had mine since April and have finally stopped panicking at every noise they make!!
chickyhazel
Ours try to run away sometimes but don't make any noise once they're picked up so I don't think they normally make much noise.
