lillybettybabs
Poor Babs has been off colour for over 4mnths now, She has laid a soft egg most days, loosing lots of feathers, crop still full some mornings. Dispite my efforts of nursing her, boosting her protein levels up and taking her to the vets. This morong she came out of the Cube all fuffed up with a full crop, I gave her some warm sugared water to help soften the mass (wasn't that hard) she the laid a softie which wasn't formed at the top so some of the egg is dripping out. I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel and am wondering if it would be best for her to be pst I have made a apointment at the vets for tonight (last chance saloon)
Daphne
Hi - I can't advise you on the best course of action to take, but just wanted to reassure you that whatever you decide to do, it will be the right choice for you at the time. Its situations like this that are the hardest, many of us have been through them and its never easy. You always end up asking yourself 'What if?' and 'Have I done the right thing?' but now I tell myself that whatever I decide to do, it is for a good reason and there is no point in dwelling on it. lillybettybabs
There dosen't seem to be any explanation, she never thrived like the other two, I do wonder if she was the runt. She has taught me alot about chickens over the past 4 months and i do feel prepared for any other sick hens just wish i could cure her. Olly
Sorry to hear this. Only you can decide, but if as you say, she has never thrived, and she's been off-colour for four months, I'm afraid it is unlikely that she will suddenly turn a corner. As said above, there is no 'wrong' decision here, only the one that is right for you.
The Dogmother
I can see your dilemma, and also that her quality of life laying all those soft eggs can't be good. As the others have said, there's no right decision, just personal choice. If she were mine, I'd despatch her though - but that's just my choice. Egluntyne
You have tried for 4 months, and she hasn't shown signs of improvement, so if the vet advises that she is pts, that would be the way to go I reckon.
lillybettybabs
It has been tough, I seem to build her up, She lays a normal egg then goes down hill again and back to softies. This pattern for four months, I have tried to get her to stop laying and rest (she won't)
The Dogmother
Some hens just aren't made to lay eggs. I'm in Banbury too if you'd like me to take a look at her. Otherwise, I'd recommend taking her to see either Clive Madeiros or David Shepherd at West Bar Vets. I think I know what they will say though.
